Perez Named Player of the Week

Naturals' catcher Salvador Perez has been selected as the Texas League Player of the Week for the period of July 18th-24th, Texas League President Tom Kayser announced Monday.
The 21-year old Valencia, Ven. resident has posted a batting average of .348 (8-for-23) with two homers and ten RBI's during the past week. The ten RBI's he accumulated was capped by a Sunday night grand slam that followed a five RBI effort on Saturday night. On the season, the Texas League All-Star owns a .273 average with eight homers and 37 runs driven in. Defensively, Perez has been the best catcher in the league at throwing out runners, gunning down 47.2% of runners attempting to steal against him.
Perez becomes the fourth Natural to win one of the league's weekly awards this season. Buddy Baumann was named as Pitcher of the Week for May 23rd -29th and the team swept the awards given for the week of May 9th-15th, as Nick Van Stratten earned Player of the Week and Will Smith was named Pitcher of the Week.
Travelers' starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker was named as the league's pitcher of the week. Shoemaker took the loss to Smith in the Naturals' no-hitter of the Travelers last Tuesday, but didn't allow an earned run in that game and allowed just one run in seven innings in a win over Tulsa on Sunday to lower his season ERA to 2.22.
