Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WORCESTER, Mass (Oct. 28, 2012) - The Worcester Sharks scored three first period goals, including two on the power play as they defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-2 at DCU Center in Worcester on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Sharks improve to 2-4-0-1. The Sound Tigers fall to 4-2-0-0
The Sharks picked up where they left off after their 5-1 victory over the Sound Tigers on Friday night, taking a 1-0 lead just 46 seconds into the game. John McCarthy eluded a poke check from Matt Donovan, skated in on Sound Tigers goaltender Kenny Reiter and fired through his legs to put Worcester ahead.
Tim Kennedy doubled the Sharks lead on the power play at 5:58 of the opening frame, putting his own rebound over Reiter to make the score 2-0. Worcester took a 3-0 lead with their second power play tally when Danny Groulx's point shot deflected through Reiter at 10:04 of the period.
Worcester increased its lead to four midway through the second period when Sena Acolatse's shot from the right point bounced off a Sound Tigers defenseman past Reiter at 8:10 of the middle frame.
Defenseman Jordan Hill, who signed a professional tryout contract with the Sound Tigers on Saturday afternoon, got the Sound Tigers on the board with 9:52 left in the second period. Hill took a feed from Marc Cantin at the point, and fired a low slap shot in for a goal in his first game as a Sound Tigers to cut the deficit to three. Colin McDonald brought the Sound Tigers within two goals with a power play tally at 14:11. Casey Cizikas whacked at a rebound in front of Alex Stalock, and McDonald finished for his first goal as a Sound Tigers to cut the Worcester advantage to 4-2.
The Sound Tigers applied plenty of pressure down the stretch, but Stalock held the Sound Tigers off the scoreboard in the final 20 minutes. Jon Matsumoto put the game out of reach with 4:17 left in regulation, beating Kenny Reiter from all alone in front for his second goal of the season.
Reiter made 41 saves in the losing effort for the Sound Tigers. Stalock made 33 saves to earn the win for Worcester.
The Sound Tigers return to action on Saturday night when they return home to face the Hershey Bears at 7:00 p.m.
