Peoria Rivermen News Release
Charlotte Checkers goaltender Dan Ellis made 27 saves and held the Peoria Rivermen off the board in a 4-0 win on Saturday night at Carver Arena. It marked the first home loss of the season and spoiled the first start of the year for Rivermen netminder Mike McKenna.
Ellis, who has spent all of the last five seasons in the NHL, earned his first AHL shutout since 2007 when he played for now-Rivermen head coach Dave Allison with the Iowa Stars.
The Checkers opened the scoring midway through the first period with a goal by Drayson Bowman. His team-leading, and league-leading, sixth of the season came at 9:53 from Justin Faulk and Riley Nash. His wirst shot, from off the right wall, sailed through a screen and over the glove of McKenna.
Rookie Jeremy Welsh scored the next two goals for Charlotte, first at 5:41 of the second and again at 4:58 of the third. The second goal also marked the first video replay review at Carver Arena.
Zac Dalpe added a power-play goal just 1:08 after Welsh's second tally to cap the scoring.
The Checkers outshot the Rivermen 35-27 and went 2-for-6 on the power play while Rivermen went 0-for-4 on the advantage.
The Rivermen and Checkers rematch on Sunday at 5:05pm. For tickets or information visit www.rivermen.net or call 309-676-1040.
