Sharks score late but fall in shootout

Bridgeport, CT - Brandon Mashinter tied the score late for the Sharks but the Sound Tigers won the game in the shootout 4-3 at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport on Friday night.

John McCarthy scored his first professional goal and gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead on a rebound chance in front after a turnover in the Sound Tigers zone at 8:46 as Andrew Desjardins and Dan DaSilva received assists. The Sound Tigers would score twice in the final 2:30 of the opening period as Andy MacDonald scored with a blister from the point and Greg Moore connect on a 5on3 power play from the right circle.

The first period was a feisty one, with several after the whistle scrums and a total of four fighting penalties. Nicholas Petrecki fought Michael Haley at 6:46 and Brandon Mashinter fought former Shark Brett Westgarth at 10:42. The Sharks trailed 2-1 after twenty minutes.

Each teamed scored early in the 2nd period as Trevor Smith gave Bridgeport a 3-1 advantage at :48 seconds. But Sharks captain Ryan Vesce got the score right back after a great feed by T.J. Trevelyan an 1:06. Vesce sent a back hand shot past Mikko Koskinen to get the Sharks back within one. Worcester trailed 3-2 after forty minutes.

Brandon Mashinter scored his first professional goal to record the Gordie Howe hat trick at 14:36 with a bullet of a shot from the right circle to tie the score at 3-3 to force overtime.

Each team had several chances in overtime but Alex Stalock and Mikko Koskinen held their ground in their creases.

The Sound Tigers got goals from Trevor Smith and Greg Mauldin in the shootout while Koskinen denied Ryan Vesce, T.J. Trevelyan, Logan Couture, and Brandon Mashinter.

With the loss the Sharks are now 1-0-0-1 this season.

NOTES: Kevin Henderson made his professional debut for Worcester and the Sharks dressed seven rookies overall... Worcester is now 6-0-0-1 in their last seven road games dating back to last season...Alex Stalock made 23 saves in net in for Worcester. ... Mikko Koskinen was in net for Bridgeport, making his AHL debut and made 32 stops and was 4for4 in the shootout...The Sharks went 0/5 on the power play while the Sound Tigers went 1/6.... Final shots were 35-27 in favor of the Sharks.
