Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms overcame a 2-0 second period deficit to record their first win of the season by beating the Springfield Falcons 3-2 Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Adirondack had a great start to the first period as they came out with lots of energy and created some good scoring chances early on. On their first power play of the night the Phantoms maintained possession in the offensive zone for the full two minutes, but Springfield goaltender Devan Dubnyk kept the game scoreless with several quality saves. Adirondack killed off two penalties of their own during the period, with strong goaltending from starter Johan Backlund, who was making his Phantoms and AHL debut.

The Phantoms dominated in the shots-on-goal category in the middle period; at one-point they were out-shooting the Falcons 13-0 in the period. However, they could not cash in and it was Springfield who struck first when Taylor Chorney fired home a rebound for a power play goal at 13:38. 33 seconds later the Falcons stunned the home crowd as Ryan O'Marra sent a long pass to Colin McDonald, who was racing down the right wing. McDonald skated to the right circle and blasted a slap shot across the body of Backlund and inside the far post at 14:11 for a 2-0 lead. But the momentum changed back to Adirondack late in the period when Andreas Nodl was hauled down from behind on a breakaway and referee Chris Brown awarded a penalty shot. Nodl took his attempt and beat Dubnyk to the glove side at 17:01 for his second goal of the season to get the Phantoms on the board. With the energy back on their side, Adirondack tied the game with their first power play goal of the season. Defenseman Oskars Bartulis blistered a slap shot from the point into the net at 18:50, his first goal of the season, assisted by Nodl and Lukas Kaspar. Overall the Phantoms out-shot the Falcons 21-9 in the second period.

For the second straight game Adirondack scored inside the first three minutes of the third period to grab the lead. Krys Kolanos sent Jonathon Kalinski down the right wing and Kalinski cut across the crease and stuff his shot through Dubnyk at 2:26 to give the Phantoms a 3-2 advantage. Later in the frame Kaspar notched his second assist of the night when he fed Josh Beaulieu for a perfect one-timer goal on a two-on-one rush at 15:37, Beaulieu's first goal of the year, giving Adirondack a 4-2 lead. Springfield made it interesting as former Phantom Ryan Potulny reacted quickly behind the net, picking up a rebound and scoring on a wrap-around before anyone could react at 17:49, bringing the Falcons within one goal. Dubnyk was pulled for the extra attacker in the final minute, but the visitors found themselves defending their empty goal several times to keep Adirondack from scoring again.

Johan Backlund recorded his first career AHL win in his North American professional debut, stopping 26-of-29 shots to help Adirondack improve to 1-1-0-0 on the young season. Devan Dubnyk took his second loss of the year, while making 39 saves on 43 shots as Springfield fell to 1-2-0-0. The Phantoms out-shot the Falcons 43-29 in the game and went 1-for-8 on the power play; Springfield was 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Syracuse to face off with the Crunch at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 10th at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. Adirondack's next home game is set for Friday, October 16th at 7:30 pm as they host the defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Time Warner Cable Cup Four-Pack is now on sale at the Phantoms office, starting as low as $56. 2009-10 Phantoms full and partial season ticket packages are still available for the 2009-10 season presented by Bud Light.
