Sharks Prepare for 3-in-3 at DCU this Weekend

The Worcester Sharks chomped zero out of a possible four points last week in two games vs. the St. John's IceCaps at the DCU Center. Worcester fell 6-3 in a rare Tuesday night affair at home to the IceCaps followed by a hard fought 3-1 loss to St. John's on Saturday. The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is rookie defenseman Sena Acolatse as he scored his first professional goal, added an assist, and fired seven shots on goal in two games. Worcester continues their season long six game home stand with three games this weekend vs. Bridgeport, Manchester, and Providence.

11.1.11 - Worcester 3 - St. John's 6 - L - DCU Center

Matt Irwin scored his AHL leading 4th goal from the blue line for Worcester but the Sharks sunk for the first time in regulation, 6-3, to the visiting St. John's IceCaps to kick off the month of November at the DCU Center on Tuesday night. Mike Connolly extended his point streak to six games with as assist (5-6-11) and Harri Sateri made28 saves for Worcester as the Sharks fell behind 3-0 in the opening 12 minutes and were never able to recover.

11.5.11 - Worcester 1 - St. John's 3 - L - DCU Center

Brodie Reid scored his first professional goal for Worcester and the Sharks outshot the IceCaps 31-20, but lost 3-1 to St. John's at the DCU Center on Saturday night. Edward Pasquale made 30 saves in net for the Ice Caps for their third straight victory. Tyson Sexsmith was solid in goal for Worcester making 17 saves as the Sharks fell to 0-2-0-1 on their season long six game home stand which continues on Friday afternoon vs. the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 4th place with 10 points (4-2-0-2) in the Atlantic Division through eight games, which is 11 points behind the first place St. John's Ice Caps (14gp), three points behind the 2nd place Providence Bruins (14gp), and one point behind the 3rd place Manchester Monarchs (14gp). The Sharks have a one point edge over the 5th place Portland Pirates (10gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

Coaching Milestones....

400 WINS!....With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

500 WINS!.... Coach Roy Sommer is just 18 wins away from 500 in his AHL coaching career.

1000 GAMES... With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (14th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record is now: 482-435 -48 -44 -39. (W-L-T-OTL-SOL)

In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 328 of the 482 victories (68%).

Shark Bites:

Captains for the 2011-12 season: Mike Moore was named the Sharks 4th captain in team history on Feb 11, 2011 and was named captain again before the start of the 2011-12 season. Alternate captains for this season: veteran forward Ben Guite and forward John McCarthy.

From east to west..... The Worcester Sharks have had 2 players (2 call-ups) receive at least one call up this season to San Jose... Currently; Andrew Desjardins, Justin Braun, Jamie McGinn, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, Frazer McLaren, and Doug Murray are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.

Outstanding October!... The Sharks finished the month of October 4-0-0-2 and outscored their opponents 22-13!

First goal of the season goes to... Curt Gogol scored the first Worcester Sharks goal of the season on Sunday at Providence, joining: Mathieu Darche in 2006, Graham Mink in 2007, Cory Larose in 2008, Andrew Desjardins in 2009, and Jonathan Cheechoo in 2010.

Sharks in the Atlantic... the Sharks had a 29-20-4-7 record against Atlantic Division prey last season and are 2-2-0-1 in the division this season.
