Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Devils rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period, but were toppled in the shootout by the Worcester Sharks, 6-5, on Sunday at the Tsongas Center. Michael Swift and Cory Murphy duplicated their offensive outputs for the second straight games, as Swift gathered two goals and an assist while Murphy registered one goal and a helper.
The Devils found themselves down 5-3 to the Sharks entering the final period after allowing four goals in the second. Stephen Gionta pulled Lowell within one at 4:07 when he swatted in a floating puck after his wrist shot deflected up off of Worcester goalie Frank Doyle.
Murphy helped pull the Devils even with 8:21 left in regulation when he held the puck in at the Sharks blueline and sailed a shot toward the net that Nick Palmieri redirected top shelf for his team-leading 21st goal of the season.
The game would head to overtime where Lowell outshot its opposition, 5-1, but could not find the back of the net. Doyle kept four Devils skaters at bay in the shootout, while Benn Ferriero and T.J. Trevelyan got the puck past Mike McKenna to gather the win for the Sharks.
The second period saw a combined six goals as Worcester skated ahead to a 5-3 lead after forty minutes of hockey. Dan DaSilva gave the Sharks the 2-1 edge just 57 seconds into the frame as he was left alone on the far post to knock in Danny Groulx's pass from the left point.
Swift responded with two goals over a minute apart that found their way off of Sharks players and into the net. The series started when a Worcester defender inadvertently knocked the rebound from Swift's left wing shot across the goal line. The Lowell center finished things off, banking in a wrister off Doyle that gave Lowell its first lead, 3-2, at 3:22.
The Sharks would go on to register three unanswered markers to give them some room heading into the third. Kevin Henderson and Trevelyan each slipped the puck past McKenna to put the Sharks ahead once again. John McCarthy made it a two-goal lead at 15:35 with a shorthanded goal off a face-off win by Andrew Desjardins.
Brandon Mashinter and Murphy traded power play goals in the first period. McKenna took the shootout loss after turning aside 30-of-35 shots through regulation.
