Pyorala Lifts Adirondack To 4-3 Win Over Hershey

Adirondack Phantoms News Release

HERSHEY, PA - Mika Pyorala's power play goal broke a 3-3 tie late in the third period and rookie goalie Carter Hutton recorded his first career professional victory as the Adirondack Phantoms beat the Hershey Bears 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Giant Center.

The Phantoms had another great start off the opening face off as they out-shot the Bears 6-1 in the first five minutes of the game and threaten to score on goalie Braden Holtby. However, a penalty to Kevin Marshall for slashing at 4:52 turned the momentum as the AHL's top power play went to work. Adirondack killed off that penalty, but at the 9:27 mark Joonas Lehtivuori's open ice hit on Mathieu Perreault was deemed to be interference by referee Chris Brown and the Bears went back on the advantage. Just 26 seconds later Hershey scored a power play goal as Keith Aucoin's centering pass from the left wing was turned in by Andrew Gordon at 9:53, his 35th goal of the year, putting the Bears ahead 1-0. There was plenty of physical play and tempers rose over the rest of the frame, but after twenty minutes the score remained 1-0 Hershey.

2:05 into the second period it was 2-0 Bears on a power play goal from Mathieu Perreault, who had a fortuitous bounce when a shot from the point took a deflection in front and fell right onto his stick at the fart post for a tap in. Hershey spent much of the second period on the power play, including a five-on-three advantage for almost a minute after Jonathon Kalinski was given a five-minute major penalty for elbowing. Adirondack killed off the five on three and then, during the long major kill, captain Jared Ross turned the tides. Ross stole a pass in his defensive zone and raced down to score an unassisted shorthanded goal at 14:07, his 11th goal of the year, to put the Phantoms on the board.

Rookie defenseman Joonas Lehtivuori tied the game at 7:37 of the third period as he blasted home a power play goal from the blue line for his fifth goal of the year and then Adirondack went ahead 3-2 at 11:33 when Kalinski set up Stefan Legein on power play goal for his 26th goal of the season. Hershey fought back and tied the game with their third power play goal of the night as Aucoin again set up Gordon at 16:10, bringing the 10,302 fans roaring to their feet. However, the Phantoms answered back a mere 70 seconds later. Five seconds after Bears captain Bryan Helmer took a holding penalty, Mika Pyorala slammed home a rebound from a Joey Mormina shot at 17:20, his eighth goal of the year, lifting Adirondack to a 4-3 win.

Rookie goalie Carter Hutton turned in an outstanding performance, stopping 35-of-38 shots to record his first career professional and AHL win in just his second career pro game as he helped Adirondack improve to 31-34-3-3 on the season. Braden Holtby allowed four goals on 20 shots, taking his sixth loss of the year as Hershey fell to 53-14-0-3. The Bears out-shot the Phantoms 38-20 and went 3-for-10 on the power play; Adirondack was 3-for-5 on the man-advantage, ending Hershey's AHL record 24-game home winning streak.

Adirondack now returns home to prepare for Round Ten of the Time Warner Cable Cup Series as they host the Albany River Rats on Wednesday, March 24th for a 7:00 pm face off at the Civic Center.
