JOLIET, Ill. - Nate Sevier (3-3) struck out a season-high 12 Kansas City batters tonight over eight and one-thirds innings of work as the T-Bones (45-49) fell, 3-1, to the Joliet JackHammers (32-61) at Silver Cross Field.
Adam Klein reached on an infield single against Ryan Knippschild (4-8) to start the first inning for Joliet. After a passed ball advanced him to second, Klein stole third and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Freddie Thon for the first run of the contest. Klein again reached safely to begin the fifth, this time on a throwing error by Neb Brown. After a fielder's choice groundout, Kevin Rios capped the scoring with a two-run home run.
Knippschild left after five innings, suffering the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on just four hits.
Sevier retired the first six batters he faced before surrendering consecutive singles to begin the third. After retiring the next six hitters, Sevier again allowed back-to-back singles to begin the fifth. The next batter, Jeff Helps, drove in the only T-Bones run with a double down the left-field line.
Following the double, Sevier put down the final 13 batters he faced, including the last five with strikeouts. He allowed just one run on five hits over eight and one-thirds innings while striking out 13 in the victory. He did not walk a batter. Drew Shetrone got the final two batters in the ninth to secure his sixth save.
Chris Rhoads threw three scoreless innings to finish the game for Kansas City.
