Schaumburg Flyers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Alain Quijano threw 5.2 innings of two-hit, shutout ball, and the rest of the bullpen did their part as the Schaumburg Flyers beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes at CanWest Park Saturday night 4-1. In fact, both Quijano and Winnipeg's starter Bill Pulsipher cruised through the first half of the game. Winnipeg ran themselves out of a scoring chance with runners at the corners with two outs in the second. Quijano lofted a pickoff throw to first base, and Kevin West was thrown out on a perfect throw from Jeff Dunbar home to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
For his part, Pulsipher took a perfect game into the fourth, ending on a one-out walk to Antoan Richardson. A hit up the middle by Victor Ferrante deflected off of Pulsipher's leg into shallow left field for a double, allowing Richardson to score all the way from first base. A groundout moved Ferrante to third, who then scored on Felix Jose's RBI single up the middle.
The 2-0 lead carried into the sixth, as Quijano had retired ten straight Goldeyes up to that point. The streak ended when Quijano walked the bases loaded, and left the game in favor of Jim Popp. Popp came on and struck out West to preserve the advantage.
Schaumburg returned the favor, loading the bases in the seventh innings to chase Pulsipher. Mark Michael served up an RBI single to Travis Brown and a sacrifice fly to Richardson to push the Flyers' lead to 4-0.
The Goldeyes did get on the board with a run in the seventh off of Popp. Brent Metheny walked, then later scored on Cody Ehlers' pinch hit sacrifice fly, arriving at the final score of 4-1 Josh Giles and Jason Richardson each pitched a scoreless inning to end the game, with Richardson (7) getting the tying run Josh Asanovich to fly out to center to notch the save.
Quijano (5-6) went 5.2 innings, giving up no runs on only two hits, striking out four while walking four. Pulsipher (4-2) walked three while striking out seven in the loss.
Two games remain in the Northern League regular season schedule. Tomorrow's 1:30 start time will feature RHP Dustin Glant (7-8, 4.92) for the Flyers opposing RHP Andrew Cruse (5-5, 4.75).
