Daytona Tortugas News Release

Lakeland, FL - A night after the Daytona Tortugas (25-15, 62-48) relied on strong pitching for a 5-0 win, it was offense that carried the day in an 8-6 slugfest with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (9-28, 42-65) on Saturday night at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Before a single out was recorded, Daytona had a 2-0 lead. DH Ty Washington led off the game with a walk, and scored on a double from CF Junior Arias, who smoked one down the left field line. Arias then stole third base and came home on a throwing error from catcher Grayson Greiner

Lakeland quickly responded against LHP Nick Routt, who had posted a 4-0 record with a 1.06 ERA in his previous seven outings. Routt got the first two batters he faced, but Curt Powell and Francisco Martinez hit back-to-back two out singles to start a rally. Ben Verlander followed with a liner to center that snuck past the dive of Arias for a two-run triple, which evened the score at 2-2.

Washington got Daytona rolling again with a leadoff double in the third, and scored two batters later on an RBI single from RF Sebastian Elizalde, his 70th of the year. Again, Lakeland answered in the bottom half.

Jiwan James led off the third with a walk, which Raph Rhymes and Francisco Martinez followed up with singles to load the bases. After a strikeout and a pop-out, Tyler Hanover tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to right. Greiner then smacked a single to left, plating a pair of runs to give Lakeland its first and only lead at 5-3.

The Tortugas evened the score in the fourth on a single from SS Carlton Daal and a two-run blast from LF Jeff Gelalich, who launched one over the right field fence for his first homer of the season.

With Calvin Drummond (L, 2-1) on the mound in the fifth, Daytona took advantage of a pair of errors to put two men in scoring position for Daal, who lined a two-run single to center and gave the 'Tugas a 7-5 advantage. The offenses cooled off from there, as the teams were held scoreless until they traded runs in the eighth inning.

Daytona made it 8-5 with a sacrifice fly from 2B Wendell Soto, and Lakeland brought it back to 8-6 with an RBI single from Jared Reaves in the bottom half.

RHP Evan Mitchell (H, 8) left the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out, and RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 5) came on to end the threat with back-to-back strikeouts. He stayed out for the ninth and struck out two more batters in a hitless final frame to clinch the series win for the Tortugas.

After Routt allowed five runs in 2.2 innings, RHP Scott Brattvet (W, 2-0) tossed three two-hit innings to lower his ERA to 0.46. RHP Carlos Gonzalez (H, 4) worked around two singles to record four outs in the sixth and seventh.

Daal hit three singles and is now 5-for-9 in the series. Washington reached base in three of five plate appearances in his first game in the leadoff spot. Arias and Elizalde each produced multi-hit games.

The Tortugas will go for the three-game sweep in Sunday's finale in Lakeland, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. LHP Amir Garrett (7-6, 2.77) will get the start for the Tortugas, who have won seven of their last eight games.
