TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (19-23, 53-59) rallied for a comeback win, 5-3, in game one before the Clearwater Threshers (26-17, 63-50) tossed a shutout, 1-0, in a double-header split on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Threshers took an early lead against LHP Dietrich Enns in the second. A two-base error allowed Rhys Hoskins to reach and Dylan Cozens drove him home with a double. Cozens was sacrificed to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Brown, giving Clearwater a 2-0 lead.
A pair of one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Threshers in the fourth. A walk by Brown forced in a run for a 3-0 Clearwater lead.
The Yankees rallied for five unanswered runs, beginning with a two-run fourth.
Dustin Fowler singled and scored on a double to the wall in right-center by Mike Ford. Miguel Andujar traded places with Ford, knocking an RBI double to left-center, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Clearwater starter Yacksel Rios surrendered a one-out single to Fowler in the sixth before LHP Ethan Stewart (1-1) entered in relief. Ford walked and RHP Ulises Joaquin replaced Stewart. Andujar, Kyle Higashioka and Ericson Leonora hit consecutive RBI singles, giving Tampa a 5-3 lead.
LHP Caleb Frare (1-0) scattered four hits over two scoreless frames in his Tampa Yankees debut, striking out one and earning the win. RHP Giovanny Gallegos tossed a 1-2-3 seventh, earning his second save.
Enns worked four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits. The southpaw walked two and struck out five in a no-decision.
Mark Leiter Jr. (4-1) held the Yankees scoreless over six innings in the later game. The right-hander scattered four hits and three walks, striking out four. RHP Miguel Nunez got two strikeouts in a perfect seventh, preserving the shutout.
Clearwater scored the only run of the game in the fourth. With two outs and the bases empty, Hoskins pulled a double to left. Cozens followed with an RBI single.
RHP Jonathan Holder (5-3) held the Threshers to one run on four hits in five and a third innings. Holder walked one batter, hit another and tallied four strikeouts. RHP Manolo Reyes made his T-Yanks debut, tossing one and two-third scoreless innings. Reyes yielded one hit and struck out two.
Fowler (4-for-5, 2B, 3B, BB, 2 R) reached base five times and added two stolen bases in the double-header. Andujar went 2-for-5 with a walk, double, two RBI and a run scored.
The series continues on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. RHP Victor Arano (4-10. 4.57 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Clearwater. The Tampa starter is TBA.
