Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - Jesus Guzman's first home run as a member of the San Francisco Giants organization led the Grizzlies to a 5-3 matinee win over the Tacoma Rainiers on Tuesday. After Tacoma tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth, Guzman led off the bottom half with an opposite field home for a lead that Fresno would not relinquish.

After a frustrating 1-0 loss in the series opener on Monday, the Grizzlies got off to a good start on Tuesday afternoon. With two out and two on in the second, Brian Horwitz tripled off the center-field wall to score Scott McClain and Ryan Rohlinger for a 2-0 lead. Fresno added another run in the third for a 3-0 advantage.

Grizzlies starter Matt Kinney retired 12 of the first 14 Rainiers he faced in the game, but Tacoma got on the board in the 5th. Callix Crabbe's two-out single scored Mike Morse with the first run of the game for the visitors, and Mike Carp and Bryan LaHair both homered in the 6th to tie the game at three runs apiece. Kinney struck out seven over 6.0 innings in earning his first win of the season.

The score was tied only briefly thanks to Guzman. In the bottom of the sixth the first baseman worked a full count from Tacoma starter Jason Vargas and blasted the payoff pitch over the right-center field wall for his first home run of the season, and a 4-3 Fresno lead. Scott McClain's RBI-single in the 8th added an insurance run, and Steve Palazzolo retired the side in the ninth for his first save of the year in the 5-3 victory.

The Grizzlies and Rainiers will meet in Game 3 of their four-game series on Wednesday evening at Chukchansi Park, with game time scheduled for 7:05pm. Kevin Pucetas makes his second start of the season for Fresno, while Tacoma sends southpaw Garrett Olson to the hill.
