April 14, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers today announced that two area high school baseball players will have the opportunity to participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby presented by American Family Insurance, which will take place at PGE Park on July 13 at 7 p.m. as part of the many festivities associated with the 2009 Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star Game in Portland.

Tickets for the All-Star Home Run Derby presented by American Family Insurance and the 2009 Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star Game, which will be held at PGE Park on July 15 at 7 p.m., are currently available at the PGE Park box office in addition to area Ticketmaster outlets, including Fred Meyer locations. Tickets can be purchased by phone at (800) 745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Throughout the first half of the Beavers season, several of the top high school sluggers will compete for a chance to represent their schools in the All-Star Home Run Derby, an annual All-Star competition that features the top power hitters from the Pacific Coast League and International League. A series of qualifying rounds will take place at PGE Park immediately following select Beavers games to determine the lucky high school participants. Those preliminary dates are: April 17, April 18, May 8, May 9, May 22, May 23, June 6, June 12, June 13 and June 26.

The contest is open to any nominated high school player in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each high school qualifier will be given five (5) points for each home run hit, three (3) points for each ball hit off the outfield wall on the fly, and one (1) point for each ball that hits the warning track on the fly. Each high school contestant will be given the opportunity to hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 12 outs (any swing not producing a home run). The two players garnering the most points during qualifying rounds will earn spots in the July 13 All-Star Home Run Derby at PGE Park.

For more information on the high school qualifying component or for coaches who would like to nominate a player to participate, contact Katie Hoffner at (503) 553-5404.
