The Battle Creek Bombers lost to the Kenosha Kingfish 6-5 Sunday afternoon, getting swept in the two-game series. With the loss, the Bombers' overall record falls to 14-14.
The Bombers were able to take the early lead. Nick Podkul hit a single with one out in the second inning, and then Ryan Dorow doubled, advancing Podkul to third. Alex Gomez hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Podkul and giving the Bombers the 1-0 lead. With two outs, Cody Sporrer hit a double, which allowed Dorow to score, and gave the Bombers the 2-0 lead.
The Bombers tacked on a run in the third inning. With two outs, Dean Miller hit a single and advanced to second on a balk. Jacob Blunt followed with a single, allowing Miller to score, and giving the Bombers the 3-0 lead.
After the Kingfish scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jacob Blunt led off the sixth with a solo homerun, giving the Bombers the 4-2 lead.
The Kingfish were able to get that run back in the bottom of the seventh. With the Bombers leading 4-3 in the eighth inning, Ryan Dorow hit a single with one out and advanced to second on his fifth stolen base of the year. With two outs, he came around to score on a single by Cody Sporrer, giving the Bombers the 5-3 lead.
The Bombers took that lead into the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Nigel Ward allowed two runs as four of the first five batters reached base with singles. After Cal Jadacki was intentionally walked to load the bases, Nick Kanavas hit a ground ball that second baseman Cody Sporrer was unable to handle, giving the Kingfish the 6-5 victory in walk-off fashion.
Bombers starting pitcher Scott Sency went a season-high seven innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits. Sency did not allow a walk, and struck out a season-high eight batters, as he takes a no decision for the first time this year.
The Bombers now travel to play the Rockford Rivets for a two-game stint beginning Monday night in Rockford at 7:35/6:35 Central.
