Binghamton Senators News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers emerged with a 4-3 victory against the Binghamton Senators after a seven-round shootout at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday evening.
Bridgeport took an early lead when winger Matt Koalska knocked a rebound by Senators goalie Ray Emery. Rob Collins gave the Sound Tigers a 2-0 advantage with his twentieth goal of the season at 2:31 of the second period. The goal came on the power play and was assisted by Eric Godard and Ryan Caldwell.
But red-hot Antoine Vermette tied the game with a pair of goals at 6:34 and 15:02 of the second period. Vermette was denied on a penalty shot by Sound Tiger goalie Dieter Kochan just before the second intermission. A goal would have given him his second hat trick in three games.
The teams exchanged power-play goals in the third period with Justin Papineau of Bridgeport and the Senators Jason Spezza scoring less than three minutes apart.
The Spezza goal allowed the game to go to overtime and eventually a shootout. Emery and Kochan were stellar in the first four rounds of the shootout as neither net minder allowed a goal.
But Sean Bergenheim got one by Ray Emery beginning a streak of five straight goals between the teams. Denis Hamel was denied in the seventh round after Justin Papineau scored to give Bridgeport the bonus point.
Binghamton converted on 1 of 4 power-play chances while Bridgeport was 2 for 6.
Emery made 37 saves on 40 shots but came up short in his bid to win his twentieth game of the season. Dieter Kochan won his second consecutive game this season at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The former B.C. Icemen (United Hockey League) goalie made 41 saves on 44 Binghamton shots to follow up his 45 save shutout on February 17.
The Senators are back in action this weekend beginning on Friday when the Hershey Bears visit the Arena. On Saturday the Philadelphia Phantoms will be the guests for the Hall of Fame Game. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. and tickets remain available by calling (607) 722-SENS.
