Connecticut Defenders News Release

(Norwich, Conn.) – United States Senators Chris Dodd and Joseph Lieberman, along with Congressman Rob Simmons of the Second District of Connecticut, have announced they will join Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell on July 18 at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium for Connecticut National Guard Day.

Five different Connecticut National Guard units have served in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the 248th Engineering Company based in Norwich. Other Connecticut units include the 1109th AVCRAD based in Groton, the 143rd Military Police Company based in Hartford, G Company, 104th Aviation based in Windsor Locks, and the 247th Engineering Detachment based in New London.

"We are extremely proud to host the highest ranking political figures of the state of Connecticut for National Guard Day," said Keith Hallal, Navigators General Manager. "This obviously underscores the immense pride we all feel for our brave men and women who have served in Iraq. It's a day the transcends all parties and allows for a personal ‘thank you' from our national, state, and local government to our fans, the teams, the media, and the Navigators. It's probably the most important day we've ever had here."

The day will be dedicated to recognizing the troops and their families. Connecticut National Guard Day at Dodd Stadium is the idea of a group of local veterans and community leaders wishing to express their gratitude and welcome home the young men and woman who have spent the last year overseas in Iraq and Kuwait.

The Navigators will host the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) at 5:05 p.m. Members of the Guard and their families are invited to come to the stadium early to enjoy a picnic and participate in the ceremony. Prior to the start of the game, a ceremony will be held to officially welcome home the soldiers. The Connecticut Guard members attending the celebration will be brought onto the field, introduced to the fans, and officially greeted by a Welcoming Committee led by Governor Jodi Rell, Major General William Cugno, Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard, and now including Senators Chris Dodd (whose father Thomas J. Dodd Stadium is, of course, named after), Joseph Lieberman and Congressman Rob Simmons.

The media is asked to arrive at approximately 3:30 p.m. The V.I.P.'s will be available for a one-on-one interview in the Navigators' Picnic Garden between 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
