Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Catcher Dane Sardinha clobbered a two-run homer in the top of the seventh and Toledo hung on for a 4-2 win over Indianapolis before a sellout crowd of 14,535 Saturday evening at Victory Field.
The first-place Mud Hens improve to 70-51 overall and 31-29 on the road, while the second-place Indians fall to 60-59 on the season and 32-26 at home. Sunday will be the Tribe's 265th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Toledo took a 3-2 lead by scoring three times in the seventh. 1B Chris Shelton (2-for-2, 1 R) got things rolling with a single to center before 2B Henry Mateo put two runners in scoring position with a double to left.
Shelton plated the first run on a wild pitch before Sardinha stepped to the dish and blasted his ninth dinger of the campaign -- a two-run shot to center.
The Mud Hens added an insurance run in the ninth. 3B Mike Hessman smashed a double to right and came plateward on Shelton's base knock to center.
Indianapolis scored both of its runs in the first. CF Matt Kata led off with a single to center and SS Brian Bixler walked before LF Michael Ryan (3-for-4, 2 RBI) whacked a two-run triple to right. Ryan's two triples tied a Victory Field record.
Tribe RHP Bryan Bullington (6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO), who allowed just six baserunners through six scoreless frames, fell to 10-6 with the loss.
Toledo RHP Dennis Tankersley (8.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO) improved to 9-6 with the win, while RHP Jose Capellan (1.0 IP, 1 SO) whipped through a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save with the Mud Hens.
The two clubs wrap up the brief two-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. RHP Anastacio Martinez is scheduled to start for Toledo, while RHP John Van Benschoten is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
The first 4,000 fans receive a Rowdie Night Light courtesy of WTHR-Ch. 13 and Cardinal Fitness. The country music group, Emerson Drive, will sing the National Anthem, perform the Seventh-Inning Stretch and participate in a meet & greet session during the game.
