LOUISVILLE, KY - Louisville third baseman Aaron Herr hit a two-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Bats to their third straight win in a 7-5 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night in front of 10,107 at Louisville Slugger Field.
Herr's shot over the left field wall followed first baseman Joey Votto's single and pulled the Bats within one game of .500 with a record of 60-61. Herr went 3-for-5 on the evening with a pair of singles.
Louisville center fielder Jay Bruce hit a two-out single to center field and gave the Bats a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Jesse Gutierrez, who had tied the game two batters earlier with a double and advanced to third base on a fielding error by Norfolk third baseman Terry Tiffee, scored on the play.
The Tides responded with an Adam Stern sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the eighth, scoring Mike Cervenak from third base. After an Alberto Castillo walk to load the bases, Louisville reliever Tyler Pelland struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Norfolk started the scoring with two runs in the top of the fifth inning as second baseman Cesar Crespo drove in Adam Stern on a sacrifice fly to center field. Castillo scored on the following play after a throwing error by Votto.
Votto sent the Bats ahead temporarily in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run double that hit the top of the left center wall. Votto finished 2-for-5 on the evening..
Louisville starter Kirk Saarloos gave up four hits and one earned run in five innings. Reliever Marcus McBeth (1-0) pitched the top of the ninth and struck out one for the win.
Kurt Birkins went 4.2 innings as the Norfolk starter, allowing three unearned runs off five hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Jim Miller (1-1) took the loss after two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work
The Bats will conclude their six-game homestand on Sunday evening against the Tides. RHP Johnny Cueto (2-1, 2.25 ERA) for Louisville and RHP Jim Johnson (5-11, 4.13) are the probable starters for the 6:15 p.m. first pitch.
