Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR - Playing in front of a packed Saturday crowd of 4,807 at Ron Tonkin Field, the Hops didn't show any stage fright. In the most complete performance of the season, the Hops pitched well, hit well, and fielded well en route to a 9-0 victory over the visiting Spokane Indians. It was the third win in a row for Hillsboro (14-10) as they continue to pressure the Eugene Emeralds for the Northwest League South Division lead. The loss dropped Spokane to 12-12.
Cody Reed started for the Hops, looking to build on his stellar outing on July 6 against the Everett Aquasox. In the outing, he posted six scoreless innings allowing just three hits with ten strikeouts. He turned in an almost identical line tonight against the Indians, going six strong, allowing no runs, three hits, walking two, and punching out eight to drop his ERA to 1.65 . The big Alabaman continues to follow the lead of Jared Miller, the other big lefty starter lighting up the Northwest League for the Hops.
The Hillsboro offense backed Reed from the jump. Fernery Ozuna singled to right with one out and stole second base, his 9th steal of the season. Stephen Dezzi followed with a walk, but was caught stealing on the back-end of a double steal as Ozuna advanced to third. With two outs, Trevor Mitsui lined a single to centerfield to plate Ozuna and provide the Hops a 1-0 lead.
The Hops went back for more in the second with a two-out rally. Zach Nehrir doubled to left, one of his three hits on the night, and scored on Ozuna's double to right. Dezzi followed with a ground ball to Spokane first baseman Connor McKay, who threw the ball away to enable Ozuna to score. Trevor Mitsui followed with his second RBI single of the night to score Dezzi to make it 4-0 Hillsboro at the end of two.
Reed kept cruising through the Spokane order, hanging zero after zero. The Hops would push another three across in the fifth when Sergio Alcantara singled to left with the bases loaded, and Nehrir singled to score Nate Irving. Alcantara would provide another two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for his third and fourth RBI's of the night.
Joey Donino entered for Hillsboro to throw a scoreless seventh, and 2015 third-round selection Taylor Clarke pitched the final two frames to run out the clock for Spokane. Clarke has yet to allow a run in the seven innings he has worked in his professional career.
It was an easy 9-0 win for the Hops, and it secured them at least a series victory in the five-game set with Spokane.
Game four is tomorrow at 4:05 PM at Ron Tonkin Field. The game will be televised nationally on American Sports Network, and can be found locally on MeTV. The Hops will be the only Northwest League team featured on a national broadcast this season.
