Owen Sound Attack News Release
Penalty woes sank the Attack on Friday night in Kitchener as the Rangers scored 6 on the power play on their way to a big victory over Owen Sound.
The Attack hit the road for the final time in the regular season to meet the Rangers on Friday night in Kitchener. Neither team had points in the standings to play for, but personal pride was on the line and they both wanted to add a win to their season total.
It was a fast start for Owen Sound, Daylon Groulx crashed the net seventeen seconds into the game to put the Attack up 1-0 after Sergey Popov and Cade Robinson led the rush down the ice. Groulx hopped onto a juicy rebound for his 17th of the season and an early lead. Maksim Sushko doubled that lead just over 2 minutes later with his 18th of the season, an unassisted effort after taking the puck from behind the net and eventually past Rangers goaltender Luke Richardson. Unfortunately, the lead wouldn't last for long. Before the halfway mark of the period, Kitchener had struck twice. Riley Damiani scored his 30th of the season and Jonathan Yantsis added his 47th on the power play at the 7:41 mark. The scoring slowed down after that point, and the Attack would head to the locker room tied with the Rangers 2-2.
The 2nd period went downhill quickly for the Owen Sound Attack as they found themselves in penalty trouble. The Rangers scored 5 times on the power play in the 2nd including 4 on a 5-minute major to Trent Bourque and Owen Sound found themselves in a 9-2 hole heading into the 3rd.
The Attack started to show signs of life in the 3rd, with Popov scoring his 9th of the season from Groulx and Andrew MacLean. The assist was Andrew MacLean's first in the OHL. The two teams went through the motions the rest of the way through and it ended in a 9-3 final for the Kitchener Rangers.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Cade Robinson. The Three Stars were swept by the Rangers with Lipanov, Damiani and Yantsis taking the honours.
The Attack will be back in action tomorrow night as they host the Rangers in the second game of the back to back. Puck drop at the Bayshore is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
