EL Akron RubberDucks

SeaWolves Strike Early and Outlast RubberDucks, 2-1, Behind Dingler's Two-Run Blast

June 25, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Unable to come back from a first inning two-run home run from Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler, the Akron RubberDucks dropped their second game in a row at home to the Erie SeaWolves on Friday night by a score of 2-1.

Turning Point

Rarely does the turning point of a ballgame come in the top of the first inning, but Erie jumped on the RubberDucks early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Riley Greene reached on a fielding error, and Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler smacked a two-run home run to the bullpen in right field, which gave Erie all the run support they would need to outlast the RubberDucks, 2-1.

Mound Presence

Getting the start for the RubberDucks for game 45 of the season was Eric Mock. Despite giving up a 2-run home run in the first inning, Mock settled down after that and gave up just three hits after that in his 5 innings of work, striking out 4 and walking two. Newly called up Nic Enright entered in relief and had a dominant first appearance in Double-A, striking out three batters and did not allow a hit or walk over three innings. Manuel Alvarez was equally impressive when he came on to work the ninth inning, allowing only a broken-bar single to right field and then proceeding to strikeout the next three Erie SeaWolves.

Duck Tales

Erie SeaWolves catcher and Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler continued his impressive homecoming week as he hit a 2-run home run in the first inning to give Erie an early 2-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the 6th, when Oscar Gonzalez teed off on a 1-1 fastball to deep left-center, soaring past the FirstEnergy Power Alley to cut the Akron deficit in half, 2-1. The RubberDucks collected seven hits on the evening but could not convert as they left six runners on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Notebook

Oscar Gonzalez made a lot of notable achievements with his solo home run in the 6th. Gonzalez, a native of San Cristobal, DR, has now hit safely 11 games in a row, marking the longest hitting streak by a RubberDucks player this season. Gonzalez's 11th home run of the season now puts him in a tie for 4th in the Double-A Northeast in home runs and 5th in RBI's with 34. ... Time of Game: 2:43 (:14 pre-game delay) ... Attendance: 4,891. (Largest crowd of the season)

On the Pond

The RubberDucks and SeaWolves will play the penultimate game of their seven-game series Saturday Night at Canal Park, which features a celebrity appearance and meet-and greet opportunity with Jaleel White. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive an Urkel from Family Matters bobblehead courtesy of Distillata, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game broadcast is on 640 WHLO AM, the WHLO iHeartRadio channel, and the TuneIn Radio App, and available on MiLB.TV. The pitching matchup has yet to be announced.
