Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) July 20, 2014 - Erie SeaWolves second baseman Devon Travis clubbed a three-run homer in the eighth inning Sunday afternoon as the SeaWolves defeated the Akron RubberDucks, 5-2, at Canal Park.
The SeaWolves took four out of five games during the series. Entering Sunday, the RubberDucks were two and a half games behind the EL West Leading Richmond Flying Squirrels who begin a three-game series at Canal Park Monday night.
Akron starter Duke von Schamman (3-6) battled through a pitchers duel for 7.2 innings to match his longest outing of the season. The righthander gave up four hits and three runs while fanning five. Von Schamann retired 10-straight batters before giving up a solo homer in the fourth inning to Steven Moya that put the SeaWolves ahead 2-0.
Despite throwing one of his best games, the 23-year-old lost his fifth consecutive start and sixth-straight decision as run support was scarce.
With the SeaWolves holding a 2-0 advantage, the RubberDucks got on the board in the seventh inning on an RBI-single from Jake Lowery, making it a one-run game before Travis' longball pushed the score to 5-2.
Akron got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth and posted another run on a Justin Toole RBI-single, but Angel Nesbitt retired the final two hitters to pick up his third save.
The RubberDucks managed just six hits off the Erie pitching staff. SeaWolves starter Warwick Saupold (6-8) picked up the win after 6.1 innings on the mound where he allowed two hits and one run while striking out three and walking four. The RubberDucks will host the EL West leading Richmond Flying Squirrels for a three-game series at Canal Park beginning Monday at 7:05. Akron will send RHP Joe Colon (8-4, 2.53) to the mound while LHP Jack Snodgress (8-3, 3.22) will make the start for the Flying Squirrels. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is its 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks.
