Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves failed to cash in with runners on base as they dropped the series opener to the Binghamton Mets, 4-3, on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium.

The game went scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the SeaWolves struck against Mets starter Seth Lugo. Connor Harrell singled with one out and moved to third on a Harold Castro double. Wynton Bernard and Corey Jones followed with back-to-back RBI singles making it 2-0 Erie.

The Mets quickly bounced back in the last of the fifth. Spot starter Guido Knudson tossed four scoreless frames but gave up a leadoff double to Xorge Carrillo and was lifted from the game. Slade Smith came in and gave up a single to Jairo Perez putting a pair on for Eudy Pina . Pina singled home Carrillo making it a 2-1 game. Jared King doubled home Perez, tying the game 2-2. Brandon Nimmo delivered what would be the game-winning hit, a two-run single for a 4-2 Mets advantage.

Erie threatened in the ninth against Mets reliever Jon Velasquez. Jones led off with a single for his fourth hit of the game. He was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Josh Prince. Dean Green singled putting runners on the corners for Jeff McVaney . The single for Green extended his hitting streak to eight straight games. McVaney lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Prince making it a one-run game at 4-3. Erie would get no closer. James Robbins singled to push pinch runner Casper Wells into scoring position but Velasquez struck out Austin Green, ending the game.

Smith (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.

Knudson allowed a run on four hits with no walks and no strikeouts in four innings of work. The four innings equaled his career-high for innings pitched. He last worked four innings while pitching for the GCL Tigers on August 27, 2011.
