Eflin Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year

Reading Fightin Phils starting pitcher Zach Eflin was announced as Pitcher of the Week by the Eastern League on Monday afternoon for the period of April 9th through April 19th.

Eflin has started 2015 by going 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. The Orlando, Florida native made his Double-A debut for Reading on April 12th in Portland where he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two over six shutout inning to earn the win Reading's 10-2 victory. He followed that up with an impressive start on Sunday against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, throwing eight scoreless innings in a 6-0 win. He gave up just three hits and struck out five batters while walking one.

The 21-year old is currently tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00) and is also ranked among the league leaders in WHIP (0.64-2nd), innings pitched (14.0-2nd) and batting average against (.143-5th). Zach, who is rated by MLB.com as the fifth best prospect in the Phillies organization, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Dodgers this winter in a trade for Jimmy Rollins. The Dodgers had acquired Eflin from the Padres for Matt Kemp. Eflin was drafted by San Diego with the 33rd pick of the 2012 draft.

Eflin is next scheduled to start on the road on Saturday, April 25th when the Fightins visit the Harrisburg Senators.
