PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 9th through April 19th:
New Britain Rock Cats catcher Tommy Murphy has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 9th-April 19th. The 24-year old is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with six doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored, seven RBIs, six walks, one stolen base and an .811 slugging percentage through his first 10 games of the season for the Rock Cats. Murphy, who is a native of West Monroe, New York, has reached base in nine straight games and had multiple hits in five of those games. He hit the first home run by a member of the Rock Cats as a Rockies affiliate in the first game of a doubleheader at New Hampshire on April 12th and went deep again in his first at bat of the New Britain home opener on April 16th. The 5'9", 156 lb. slugger currently leads the league in homers (3), slugging percentage (.811), OPS (1.299), doubles (6), total bases (30) and extra-base hits (9) and is tied for first in hits (15). He is also among the leaders in batting average (.405-3rd), on-base percentage (.488-3rd), runs scored (8-tied 5th), RBIs (7-tied 6th) and walks (6-tied 7th). Tommy, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the eighth best prospect in the Rockies organization, was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the 2012 draft after hitting .311 as a junior at SUNY Buffalo.
Zach Eflin, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Fightin Phils, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 9th-April 19th. The 6'4", 200 lb. hurler has started a pair of games for the Fightins this season and has a record of 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Eflin, who is a native of Orlando, Florida, made his Double-A debut for the Fightins on April 12th at Portland. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two over six shutout innings to earn the win in Reading's 10-2 victory. Zach was even more impressive in his second start of the season on April 19th against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels, throwing eight scoreless innings in a 6-0 win. He scattered three hits and struck out five batters while walking one. The 21-year old is currently tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00) and is also ranked among the league leaders in WHIP (0.64-2nd), innings pitched (14.0-2nd) and batting average against (.143-5th). Zach, who is rated by MLB.com as the fifth best prospect in the Phillies organization, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Dodgers this winter in a trade for Jimmy Rollins.
