Akron scored earlier in the top of the first inning off Anthony Vasquez as Ollie Linton scored on a double-play ground ball hit by Yandy Diaz to take a 1-0 lead. Reading bounced back in the bottom of the first inning off RubberDucks starter Will Roberts as Aaron Altherr hit a three-run home run to give the Fightin Phils a 3-1 lead. The home run was the first of the season for Altherr.
Akron cut the Fightins' lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning off Vasquez as Erik Gonzalez hit a RBI single to score Justin Vasquez. Altherr struck again in the bottom of the third inning against Roberts as he hit a RBI single to score Roman Quinn and give Reading a 4-2 lead.
Akron tied the game at 4-4 off Vasquez in the top of the 5th inning as Yonathan Mendoza hit a two-run home run. Justin Toole scored on the home run and reached base in the prior at-bat due to a throwing error by KC Serna.
