SeaWolves Clobber Squirrels in Game Two, 14-3

ERIE, PA - The Erie SeaWolves (48-55) scored 14 unanswered runs to hand the Richmond Flying Squirrels (56-47) their most lop-sided loss of the season, 14-3, in front of 5,166 at Jerry Uht Park on Tuesday night. The 14 runs, as well as 18 hits for Erie, were season-highs allowed by the Squirrels.
As they did in game one, the Squirrels took the first lead of the ballgame, plating a run off of Erie starter L.J. Gagnier in the top of the third inning. Sharlon Schoop got Richmond started with a single, which Wendell Fairley followed with a single. Francisco Peguero put Richmond in front, 1-0, with a double through the left-center field alley. Gagnier left the ballgame a batter later due to a finger issue on his throwing hand.
In the fourth, the Squirrels added a pair of runs to their lead against right-hander Jared Gayhart. Richmond tallied five consecutive hits in the inning, making all three outs in the frame on the bases. The uprising for the Squirrels included an RBI triple from Juan Perez and an RBI single from Schoop as Richmond took a 3-0 lead.
Richmond left-hander Clayton Tanner held off the SeaWolves through the first three innings, but a costly error by Schoop would help Erie break through in the fourth. Ben Guez led off the inning with a single, and Rawley Bishop followed with a grounder to Schoop. What should have been a double-play ball was misplayed by Schoop and instead of empty bases with two outs, the SeaWolves had runners at the corners with nobody out. Francisco Martinez followed with a single to score Guez. A batter later, Audy Ciriaco tied the ballgame with a two-run double. Ciriaco took third on an attempted throw to the plate. He came in for the lead on a fielder's choice ground ball from John Murrian. The SeaWolves plated four runs in the inning, two of which were unearned due to the error on Schoop.
Tanner (3-8) departed in the inning, taking the loss over 3 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs - two earned - on six hits. He walked one and struck out one as he fell for the eighth time on the season.
The SeaWolves struck again in the fifth inning, plating three runs against right-hander Daryl Maday. Maday hit Guez to start the inning, and the next three hitters all recorded hits. Bishop singled, and Martinez delivered an RBI single. Bryan Pounds capped the inning with a two-run double, and the SeaWolves held a 7-3 lead.
Erie put the game out of reach with three more against right-hander Edwin Quirarte in the seventh inning. An inning-opening error on Schoop didn't help Quirarte, who permitted an RBI double to Murrian and a two-run single to Brandon Douglas.
Quirarte again struggled in the eighth inning, surrendering four more runs to the SeaWolves, as they ran their lead up to 14-3. Utility-man Skyler Stromsmoe finished the inning on the mound, making his first pitching appearance of the season for Richmond.
Gayhart (3-0) earned the win in relief. He allowed two runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out three. Right-handers Tyler Stohr and Robbie Weinhardt combined for three scoreless innings of relief to complete the rout.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 12:05 PM on Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. RHP Justin Fitzgerald (7-5, 3.34) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Brooks Brown (2-5, 6.42) for the SeaWolves.
