Sea Dogs Push Past Mets 4-2

Binghamton, New York- The Portland Sea Dogs utilized some timely hitting to beat the Binghamton Mets 4-2 on Tuesday night. Ryan Khoury went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, including the game-winner in the eighth inning. Tim Federowicz blasted a solo shot in the ninth to preserve the victory for Kyle Fernandes (1-4). The lefty went two innings in relief of Chris Balcom-Miller, allowing just one run on one hit. Blake Maxwell recorded the final four outs to earn his 10 save for Portland.
Alex Hassan came through with the game-winning hit that drove in Khoury in the eighth. Khoury kept the inning alive with two outs in the inning, then moved into scoring position when Jack Egbert (0-1) balked. Hassan followed it up with a base hit to give Portland a 3-2 lead. Federowicz led off the next inning with his seventh home run of the year to give the Sea Dogs the 4-2 advantage.
The Mets tied things up off Fernandes late in the game when Jordan Valdespin drove in the tying run with two outs in the seventh inning. That gave Balcom-Miller a no decision after the 22-year old pitched into the sixth inning, allowing just one run and seven hits, while striking out seven. Colin McHugh also got a no decision, but picked up a quality start in six innings of work for Binghamton.
The Sea Dogs seized the lead just three batters into the game. Khoury led off the first inning with a double. The shortstop moved to third base on a groundout by Hassan. Then, Chih-Hsien Chiang followed with a single to centerfield, driving in his league-leading 74 RBI of the season. The lead jumped to 2-0 Portland when Oscar Tejeda drove in Federowicz on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Mets responded in the third. Matt den Dekker and Reese Havens started the frame with back-to-back base hits. Balcom-Miller nearly got out of the inning when Valdespin's line drive found the glove of Jon Hee while he was standing on first base. That quickly eliminated both Valdespin and Havens, but Hee's throw to second base couldn't catch den Dekker in time for the triple play. Brahiam Maldonado followed with a blast that hit the wall then bounced over. It was initially ruled a home run, but then was changed to a double, allowing just one run to score instead of two.
Mets manager Wally Backman and Binghamton first baseman Allan Dykstra were both thrown out of the game. Backman was tossed by first base umpire Jon Saphire for arguing that Maldonado's ground-rule double should have stayed as a home run. Dykstra was tossed after striking out to end the bottom of the seventh inning, his fourth punchout of the game.
The Sea Dogs and Mets will play the last of their three-game set tomorrow night. After that, Portland returns to Hadlock Field on Thursday, July 28 for the start of a four-game series against the Altoona Curve. That night will feature Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks and the second Bark in the Park night this season.
