Seattle Storm News Release

SEATTLE - The Seattle Sonics & Storm today announced plans to contribute $75,000 worth of cash and supplies to benefit the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. This donation is an addition to the more than $25,000 raised during the Storm's playoff run. The organization has joined forces with local media outlets FSN Northwest and Sports Radio 950 KJR AM to collect and distribute additional essential items for evacuees now located in Louisiana and Texas.

Fans are invited to join the cause by bringing new clothing (including shoes and underwear), sheets, blankets, pillows and personal care products (including toothbrushes, soap, deodorant and feminine hygiene products) to any of the three area collection sites between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. next Thursday (Sept. 22) and Friday (Sept. 23). Cash donations will also be accepted. The three collection sites are:

The Furtado Center - 490 5th Ave. N., Seattle FSN Northwest - 3626 156th Ave. S.E., Bellevue Sports Radio 950 KJR AM - 351 Elliott Ave. W., Seattle

Donations collected at these sites will assist the relief efforts of Feed the Children, Inc., an international, nonprofit relief organization that delivers food, medicine, clothing and other necessities to individuals, children and families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty or natural disaster. A portion of the donations will also be delivered to the Southeast Texas Disaster Relief Fund located in Beaumont, Texas, the hometown of Sonics All-Star forward Rashard Lewis. Pacific Alaska Forwarders has donated their services to transport the supplies.

Sonics legend Slick Watts, a Mississippi native and graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, will be on hand in the Gulf Region to receive the supplies and distribute them to those in need.

"The Sonics & Storm family, including our players, coaches, staff and owners, recognizes the importance of aiding the massive relief effort," said Sonics & Storm President and CEO Wally Walker. "We welcome the community in joining us to support this important cause, both now and into the future."

As a thank-you to all who participate in the organization's relief efforts, each fan making a donation will receive a voucher for two complimentary tickets to a Sonics preseason home game at KeyArena (Oct. 14 vs. Phoenix at 7 p.m. or Oct. 19 vs. the L.A. Clippers at 7 p.m.).

Earlier this month, the Sonics & Storm organization partnered with Storm center and New Orleans native Janell Burse to raise money in support of the relief efforts. The organization accepted donations at the Storm's two first-round home playoff games, ultimately collecting more than $25,000 to support the relief efforts of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, Burse's family parish in New Orleans.
