
Cash Heads To Gulf Coast As Part of Operation Rebound

Auburn Hills, MI - The Detroit Shock's Swin Cash flew to the Gulf Coast today to take part in Operation Rebound - a relief effort to provide food and assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina organized by the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) in conjunction with Feed The Children.
Cash and more than a dozen other NBA and WNBA players will travel from Jackson, Mississippi to Hattiesburg, Biloxi and Gulfport in a caravan of 20 twenty tractor trailers full of supplies for those impacted by the hurricane.
In addition, the Detroit Pistons, the Detroit Shock and Palace Sports & Entertainment (PS&E), along with WDIV Local 4 and Art Van Furniture, have organized a mass collection effort to supply goods to the Salvation Army in the Gulf Region.
The Rescue 4 Hurricaid: Flight of Champions Project began Monday, September 12 with donation centers set up in the main entrance of all 30 Art Van Furniture locations in Michigan. Art Van locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day during the project. The last day to donate items is Saturday, September 17.
On Tuesday, September 20 the Shock's Barbara Farris, the Pistons' Lindsey Hunter, and PS&E President and CEO Tom Wilson, along with representatives from WDIV and Art Van Furniture, will load the collected items onto Roundball One, the Pistons team plane, and fly the goods down to Salvation Army distribution centers in Biloxi, Mississippi and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Collection sites will accept the following tangible items.
- Non-perishable food items
- Baby items, diapers, wipes, formula
- Hygiene (male and female) items
- Toiletries
- Towels
- Paper plates, cups and napkins
- Plastic forks, spoons and knives
- Buckets, mops, brooms, scrub brushes, bleach
- First aid kits and bandages
- Trash bags (large, heavy duty)
- Generators and extension cords
- Cots, blankets, pillows
- Insect repellent (w/ DEET)
WDIV and the Pistons will be producing several Public Service Announcements that will run during the project, urging Michiganders to get involved.
