Bristol State Liners News Release

The Bristol Pirates series finale with the Greeneville Reds was cancelled on Thursday night just two outs short of becoming an official game.

The game was the final time the Reds and Pirates were scheduled to face each other this season, and it will not be made up. All statistics from the game will not count as a result of the cancellation.

The Pirates were leading 8-2 with one out in the top of the fifth inning, when the umpires called for a delay after lightning was spotted on the horizon beyond the right field fence. After extended discussions on the field, the tarp was pulled over the infield shortly before a torrential downpour hit the stadium. As a result of the rain, the field became unplayable due to flooding in the outfield and bullpen areas and the game was called about 30 minutes after the initial delay was announced.

Among the statistics lost due to the cancellation were center fielder Chase Murray's first career home run and second baseman Jesus Valdez's second home run of the season. Starter Santiago Florez was in line for his first win of the season before the game was cancelled.

The Pirates (19-21) will begin a six-game road trip on Friday night as they travel to Elizabethton to take on the second-place Twins. After the series in Elizabethton, the Pirates will travel to Danville to face the Braves for three games before returning home on Thursday to begin a four-game series with the Kingsport Mets.
