Sean Farrell Claims All-Time Steel Points Record as Steel Top Lumberjacks
March 5, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release
MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN -- Sean Farrell claimed sole possession atop the team's all-time points list and the Chicago Steel (25-8-3-0; 53 pts.) defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks (21- 12-1-2; 45 pts.) by a 6-3 score on Friday night at Mercy Health Arena in Michigan.
The current USHL leader with 69 points (21G, 48A) this season, Farrell charted a goal and a helper to tie and pass Dan Charleston (Steel 2002-2005) for first place in points in Steel history. In 79 career games for Chicago, Farrell has totaled 125 points (36G, 89A) spanning two seasons.
"Sean Farrell, often overlooked in so many instances, has made his mark for our team on a nightly basis over the past two seasons, " said Steel General Manager Ryan Hardy. "For him to claim the Chicago Steel all-time record for points in just 79 games speaks to the incredible talent and work habits that he possesses. I can't think of a more deserving player to stand alone atop the Steel record books.
Matt Coronato added his own milestone in the win, netting his 32nd goal of the season to match the franchise single-season mark, becoming the ninth player in team history to reach the 100- point plateau in his Steel career. Coronato now has 50 goals and 50 assists in 79 career contests. He now shares the single-season goals record with Andrew Miller (Steel 2007-2009).
A silky assist from Quinn Finley helped the Steel get on the board early in the game. The Suamico, Wis., native dangled a puck in the right circle before centering a pass to Joe Miller on the other side of the crease. Miller tapped home the goal, his fourth of the season and the first Chicago marker of the night.
Just past the halfway point of the first, Coronato lit the lamp to give his team a two-goal edge.
The Harvard University-bound skater caught a pass from Colton Huard in the neutral zone and motored into the Steel offensive zone. Coronato made a quick move cutting to the right to get around a Muskegon defender, unleashing a wrist shot from inside the right circle. Defenseman Ian Moore put the Steel ahead by three with his sixth goal of the season late in the opening frame. The blueliner worked a give-and-go play with forward Dawson Pasternak on a line rush, receiving a pass from Pasternak with enough time to make a forehand-backhand move to beat Lumberjacks netminder Nathan Reid through the five hole.
Muskegon quickly responded to cut the deficit back to a two-goal game. Jack Williams tipped a puck that was thrown on net by Danil Gushchin, breaking through for the first Lumberjacks marker of the night as the teams went to the first intermission with the Steel holding a 3-1 lead.
Penalties slowed the pace of the action in the middle frame until a barrage of three combined goals were scored in a stretch of just over two minutes to end the frame.
Cameron Berg tallied the Lumberjacks only power play goal of the game on a second-chance opportunity. Nick Portz had his shot turned away by Steel netminder Simon Latkoczy before the puck trickled behind the Slovakian netminder where Berg tapped in his 20th of the year.
The one-goal game was short-lived as the Steel pulled away, scoring three consecutive goals.
Less than 30 seconds later, Farrell controlled the puck in the Steel offensive zone, circling behind the net and feeding a pass to Jack Babbage. Cutting to the cage, Babbage fired a wrister that popped the back of the net to extend the Steel lead to 4-2. Farrell capped the second period to earn his piece of Chicago Steel franchise history. The Harvard University-bound skater kept a puck in the Steel zone, making an elusive move around his defender to the goal line, firing a puck past Reid's glove for his 125th point (36G, 89A) in a Steel sweater.
Jack Harvey stretched the Steel lead to 6-2 in the third period, the club's largest advantage of the night, with a beautiful wraparound goal, his second marker of the season.
After giving up 23 shots on goal through the first two periods of the game, the Steel defense put the game away, limiting the Lumberjacks to just five shots in the final frame.
Muskegon's Dylan Wendt picked up his 10th goal of the season with under a minute to play before the final buzzer sounded. Latkoczy improved his record to 5-2-0-0 between the Steel pipes with a 25-save performance as the Steel outshot their opponents 35-28 in the win.
With the 6- 3 victory, the Steel snapped Muskegon's five-game win streak and increased its lead in the Eastern Conference standings to eight points. Despite entering the Friday night battle with the top-ranked power play in the USHL, Chicago went 0-for-6 (0.0%) on the man advantage but charted a 4-for-5 (80.0%) effort on the penalty kill.
The Steel rematch against the Lumberjacks on Saturday March 6 at 6:00 pm CT. The weekend concludes with Chicago's eighth consecutive road contest, a 3:00 pm CT clash against Team USA (U18) at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.
