Seals Skid Reaches 9 With A 4-1 Defeat

After polishing off the final frame of a rain-delayed game one on Wednesday evening, the Victoria Seals took on the Calgary Vipers for a seven-inning contest at Royal Athletic Park. Turning to Jino Gonalez (0-2) for the start in game two, the Seals squared off against Dusty Gober (0-1) who took the ball for the Vipers.
With both teams putting base runners on but failing to convert in the opening three innings, Calgary jumped on the board first in the top of the fourth. A walk to Kevin Price set up a two-run home run from catcher Luis Taveras, leaving the Vipers up 2-0 after four frames.
Doulbing their lead in the top of the sixth inning, extra-base hits from both Drew Miller and Caonabo Cosme scored one before Gober completed the suicide squeeze at home plate to lift Calgary to a 4-0 advantage.
Hoping to stage a response in the bottom of the seventh, a lead-off bomb from Shane Cronin put the Seals on the board. But after a base hit from Chris Van Rossum chased reliever Berek Fasking from the game, Rene Miniel closed the door on the Seals, polishing off a 4-1 Calgary win.
A fantastic outing from Dusty Gober earned the Calgary starter his first win of the year, while a strong performance from Jino Gonzalez was not enough to prevent the left-hander's third loss on the season. Luis Taveras' second home run in as many nights led the way for the Vipers, while Dale Swinford stretched his hit streak to six games in a losing effort for Victoria.
