Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Closing out a three-game series against the Orange County Flyers, the Victoria Seals returned to Fullerton College for a matinee double-header on Tuesday. Sending Jeff Duda (2-3) to the mound for the start, the Seals matched up against former major league pitcher Cha-Seung Baek (2-1) in the first game of the afternoon.

With bother starters cruising out of the gate, the contest remained scoreless until Victoria jumped onto the board in the top of the fourth inning. After a lead-off single from Josh Arhart and a double off the bat of Brian Rios put a pair in scoring position, Matt Kavanaugh gave the Seals a 2-0 lead with a double to the wall.

Two batters later, following a single courtesy of Jerry Madueno, Duda drove in another pair of runners with Victoria's third extra-base hit of the frame to hand the visitors a 4-0 lead through four innings.

After two more scoreless innings in Orange County, the Seals doubled their lead in the final frame of regulation. Another double, this time from Terrence McClain, converted when Arhart picked up an RBI single before Kavanaugh cashed Tim Rodriguez to put Victoria up 6-0. Madueno then drove in both Colin Moro and Kavanuagh to lift the Seals to a commanding 8-0 advantage.

Spoiling the Seals shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh, former Victoria slugger Sergio Pedroza notched a two-run home run to put the Flyers on the board. That would be as far as Orange County would come, however, as Seals reliever Chris Bodishbaugh registered three straight outs to polish off an 8-2 Victoria win.

Jeff Duda was excellent on the mound for Victoria, allowing just the home run en route to his third win on the season, while Flyers starter Cha-Seung Baek took the loss with four innings worked. A 4-for-4 outing from Terrence McClain to go with two hits and three RBI's from Matt Kavanaugh paced the Seals, while Jimmy Rohan went 2-for-2 in a losing effort for Orange County.

Returning for the series finale a half-hour later, the Seals were looking for the sweep in game three against the Flyers. Victoria turned to Jason Kershner (5-4) on the hill, while the home side gave Jake Renshaw (1-2) his fifth start of the season.

Striking first in the bottom of the second, Orange County took a 1-0 lead when a lead-off walk to Keith Ginter converted on a run-scoring single from Julian Benavidez after the Flyers infielder stole second base and advanced on an overthrow from Victoria catcher Matt Kavanaugh.

Orange County then stretched their lead by another set of runs in the third frame, using four consecutive singles from Steve Boggs, Tyler Keeble, Jimmy Rohan and Sergio Pedroza to score a pair before Rohan crossed home on a run-down play to give the Flyers a 4-0 advantage.

Adding some insurance in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Julian Benavidez followed up a walk to David Harris with a two-run home run against former teammate Mike Koons who was on the mound for the first time as a Seal.

Only able to muster two hits against the Orange County starter, Victoria was blanked by both Mark Prior and Andre Simpson out of the Flyers bullpen and fell by a 6-0 final score in game three.

Jake Renshaw earned his first win on the season with five innings of shutout baseball on the mound, while Jason Kershner was handed the loss after four earned runs against in four innings of work. Two hits and three batted in from Julian Benavidez led the way for Orange County, while Wilver Perez finished 1-for-2 but was unable to continue his assault on the record books, stalled at 50 stolen bases - just two shy of the single-season record.
