Caps Capture Opener In Maui

August 3, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Wailuku, HA - The Edmonton Capitals made the most of their Maui debut on Monday, as they snapped a three-game losing skid with a 6-5 victory over the host Na Koa Ikaika.

The victory didn't come easy for the distant visitors, though, as they trailed 5-3 after the fourth inning before scoring once in the fifth and twice more in the seventh to come from behind and win. After dropping three straight to Orange County to start the trip, the Caps are now back in second place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division in the second half at 8-6, trailing the first-place Calgary Vipers (10-6).

Almost all of the Caps' offence in the first of seven straight games in Maui came from their first four hitters. Centre fielder and leadoff hitter Ryan Stevenson went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while short stop Enrique Cruz went 1-for-4 and scored three times. Left fielder Larry Bigbie and first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh each drove in two runs, as the sluggers continue to dominate the GBL offensive stat categories.

Sherwood Park's Lou Pote continued his impressive season thus far with another sterling start. The former World Series champion with the Anaheim Angels improved his perfect record to 7-0 by scattering five runs and seven hits over seven innings while striking out 11. Pote leads the GBL in strikeouts with 86.

Perhaps the most significant positive on the night was the performance of closer Chad Blackwell, who shut the door on Maui in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his 12th save, which is tied for tops in the GBL. It was a bounce-back night for Blackwell, who picked up losses in his previous three outings.

The Caps and Na Koa Ikaika square off again tonight, starting at 10:35 p.m. (MST). They finally return home to face the North Division first-half champions, the Chico Outlaws (9-7), on Tuesday, Aug. 10 - the first of 13 consecutive games at TELUS Field.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
