Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - A potent power play carried the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-1 victory in Sydney on Saturday afternoon over the Cape Breton Eagles.

There was a quick pace to the opening period, but just the one goal which came on the Sea Dogs first power play of the game. Ryan Francis fed a short pass to Josh Lawrence who ripped it by Rémi Delafontaine. Delafontaine made 12 stops in the opening period.

The Eagles best chance to tie the game may have come early in the second period when Carter McCluskey rung a shot off the post. Jack Campbell had an open goal on the rebound, but put the puck over the net, and was denied by Thomas Couture later in the same sequence.

Saint John's power play did even more damage in the second period, starting with a heavy shot from William Dufour and then a precise shot from Ryan Francis on consecutive power plays before the halfway mark. Just 15 seconds after the Francis marker, Saint John notched their first even strength goal of the game as Cam MacDonald put the puck just under the bar.

MacDonald began to celebrate, feeling he had scored but there was confusion on the ice as to whether the goal would count. Peter Reynolds slid the puck into an empty net, but a video review validated MacDonald's shot as a good goal.

The Eagles had a chance to get back into the game late in the second period with a 1:14 second long five on three. The power play carried over into the third period, and Saint John killed the first minor off. However, a penalty to Vincent Sévigny extended the five on three and this time the Eagles capitalized on a Jérérmy Langlois point shot through traffic. The Eagles were unable to score on the remaining 5 on 4 power play.

But the home side did generate the bulk of the chances in the third period, outshooting Saint John 18-8. Much pressure came when Delafontaine was lifted for an extra attacker, and Sevigny was whistled again which created a six on four situation. However, the Eagles were unable to score and following a successful penalty kill, Dufour hit the empty net for his 48th goal of the season, a new single season record for a Sea Dogs player.

Couture picked up the win in goal for Saint John, stopping 34 of 35 shots. Delafontaine took the loss, stopping 27 of 31 in addition to the empty net goal.

The Eagles will continue their home stand with another instalment of the Battle of Nova Scotia as the Mooseheads come to town on Tuesday night. Puck drop is at 7 PM.
