Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (35-17-1-3) finished their back-to-back against the Cape Breton Eagles (13-34-4-3) with another win Saturday afternoon. William Dufour set a franchise record with his two goals, passing Danick Gauthier for most goals in a single season by a Sea Dog, Josh Lawrence earned first star honours on the night with a four point performance, and Ryan Francis and Cam MacDonald hit the back of the net in the 5-1 win on the road.
Thomas Couture got the start for Saint John, earning himself the third star of the night with 34 saves on 35 shots and Remi Delafontaine started for Cape Breton, stopping 27 of the Sea Dogs 31 shots.
A hooking penalty to Jérémy Langlois 7:35 into play sent the Sea Dogs to the first power play of the afternoon, and they did not hesitate to take advantage. At 8:18, Josh Lawrence opened the scoring with the man advantage, picking up a pass from Ryan Francis in the slot and firing a shot past the Eagles netminder.
Cam MacDonald was sent off for checking from behind at 13:56 and the Sea Dogs successfully killed their first penalty of the night.
With 1:40 remaining in the period, Cam Squires was sent off for slashing and the Sea Dogs went into the second period with 20 seconds remaining on the power play.
Shots after the first were 13-10 for Saint John.
Saint John dominated the second frame, scoring three goals, including two more power play goals, to take a 4-0 lead into the final period.
William Dufour struck first on an early power play, scoring his 47th of the season and tying the record set by Danick Gauthier for most goals in one season by a Sea Dog.
Another power play gave Ryan Francis the opportunity to score on his former team for the second time in as many games, making it 3-0 at 9:28.
Fifteen seconds later Cam MacDonald added one of his own. The goal went to a quick review but was deemed good and the Sea Dogs took a 4-0 lead.
Late period penalties to Marshall Lessard and Charlie DesRoches sent play to 5-on-3 for the end of the period.
Shots were 24-17 for Saint John after 40 minutes of play.
The 5-on-3 carried over briefly into the final period and Vincent Sévigny was sent off for interference fourteen seconds after puck drop, extending the two-man disadvantage for the Sea Dogs.
Cape Breton broke the shutout with their first goal of the night 50 seconds into the period, Jérémy Langlois finding the back of the net on the power play.
The Eagles made a strong push at the end of the game, pulling their netminder and keeping the pressure on, but the Sea Dogs held them to one goal for the rest of the afternoon.
With 1:09 remaining, William Dufour finished off the game, scoring his second of the night and breaking a Sea Dogs franchise record, passing Danick Gauthier for most goals scored in a single season at 48.
Final shots were 35-32 for Cape Breton.
