Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Hartford, Connecticut - The Portland Sea Dogs (15-8, 45-47) set a franchise record for team stolen bases in a single game with seven, while Nick Northcut hit his first Double-A home run in a 9-4 win over the Hartford Yard Goats 14-8, 57-34) on Wednesday at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
Portland's seven stolen bases were the most since Portland stole six on July 22, 2012 at New Hampshire. Rafaela (2), Christian Koss (2), Christian Arroyo, David Hamilton and Izzy Wilson combined to complete the feat and set the new single-game franchise record.
In his Major League rehab appearance, Arroyo went 1-for-1 with a run, two walks, and a stolen base.
The scoring opened in the top of the first inning with the Sea Dogs bringing in a run against Yard Goats starter Mitch Kilkenny. With one out, Ceddanne Rafaela reached on an infield single and stole second base. Major League rehabber Christian Arroyo came through with an RBI base hit to center, driving in Rafaela to take the lead 1-0.
Hartford quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a run against Portland starter Brett Kennedy. Hunter Stovall collected a one-out single and stole second base. Michael Toglia grounded a base hit to left, bringing around Stovall to tie the game 1-1.
After a scoreless top half, the Yard Goats took the lead in the bottom of the second with Kennedy still on the mound. Willie MacIver led off the inning with a double, putting himself in scoring position. Niko Decolati doubled to right, plating MacIver to take the lead 2-1. Daniel Montono singled one out later, bringing in Decolati, expanding the Yard Goats lead to 3-1.
The Sea Dogs clawed back in the top of the third innings, driving in three runs with Kilkenny still pitching. Rafaela led off with a single and stole second. Arroyo walked and Christian Koss singled to right, bringing around Rafaela to make it a 3-2 game. Arroyo and Koss executed a double steal, and both moved up on a throwing error with Arroyo scoring, tying the game 3-3. Stephen Scott hit an infield, scoring Koss to give the Sea Dogs their first lead of the night, 4-3.
The game was tied again after the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Montono crushed a solo homer run to right field. It was his eighth of the year and evened the score at 4-4.
Two more runs came in to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the fifth. Izzy Wilson worked a one-out and stole second base. Tyler Dearden launched a two-run homer to right field, bringing in two runs to make it a 6-4 advantage for the Sea Dogs.
The bats stayed hot for Portland in the top of the sixth. Kole Cottam led off with a double and Koss singled to put runners on the corners. Scott lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Cottam, increasing the difference to 7-4. A wild pitch brought in Koss, giving Portland a four-run lead, 8-4. Nick Northcut added on with his first Double-A home run, and his 27th of his minor league season overall, lifting the Sea Dogs to a 9-4 advantage. Kyle Hart and Ryan Fernandez combined for 4.0 perfect innings, shutting down the Yard Goats for a 9-4 win.
Kennedy (3-5, 4.70 ERA) picked up the win, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing four runs on eight hits, walking one, and striking out three. Trent Fennell (2-2, 6.35 ERA) hurled 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs on one hit, walking five, and striking out one in his second loss of the year.
