Portland Sea Dogs News Release
TUESDAY'S OPENER - The Sea Dogs fell short of the Yard Goats on Tuesday 6-1 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. In the bottom of the third inning, Bryan Mata issued three consecutive walks to begin the inning. Willie MacIver then scored on an RBI groundout by Hunter Stovall putting the Yard Goats on the board, 1-0. Grant Lavigne then drove home Isaac Collins with a single to right field and Hartford led, 2-0. In the top of the fifth inning, Wil Dalton reached on an infield single and then advanced to second base on a throwing error by the pitcher, Nick Bush. David Hamilton lined an RBI double to centerfield, scoring Dalton and the Sea Dogs continued to trail, 2-1. Hunter Stovall blasted his seventh homer of the year in the bottom of the fifth inning, extending Hartford's lead, 3-1. Willie MacIver smashed his 13th home run of the year with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Yard Goats led, 5-1. The final blow by Hartford came in the bottom of the seventh inning with Stovall's second home run of the night, extending the Yard Goats' lead to a final score of 6-1.
NEW FACES - Prior to Tuesday's game, the Sea Dogs saw INF Nick Northcut and major league rehabber RHP Matt Barnes join the team in Hartford. Northcut, who was called up from High-A Greenville after hitting .223 with 26 homers, went 1-for-4 in his Double-A debut. Barnes came in for 1.0 scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two. Barnes last pitched for the Red Sox on May 30th but came to Portland after rehab appearances with Worcester last week.
TONIGHT'S DESIGNATED HITTER - Christian Arroyo will be tonight's designated hitter for the Sea Dogs tonight on a Major League rehab assignment from the Boston Red Sox. In 42 games this year, Arroyo is hitting .224 for the Red Sox with 12 doubles, six home runs and 25 RBI.
WHO CAN SLOW HIM DOWN? - Opposing teams are still figuring out how to slow down David Hamilton, in more than one way. With a 2-for-3 night in Hartford on Tuesday, Hamilton extended his on-base streak to 16 games. Over this time, he is hitting .279 (17-for-61), with three doubles, three homers, six RBI, and 11 walks compared to 13 strikeouts. Once getting on base, Hamilton has been a menace, stealing
a league-leading 44 bags this season. More impressively, over the 16-game streak, he has successfully stolen 15 bases without being caught, increasing his runs score during the streak to 16.
SUMMER SLUGGER - Kole Cottam is in the midst of a seven-game hit streak, going 12-for-28 (.429) with two doubles, two triples, and eight RBI, but his month of July as a whole has been just as impressive. Since starting July, Cottam has batted .302 while hitting three doubles, two triples, and a homer, leading to 12 RBI and six runs scored himself. This is his best month since the season opened up in April, where he hit .300 with four doubles and six RBI.
A DECISIVE SERIES - For the first time in the second half of Eastern League play, the Sea Dogs are in second place. Portland led the Northeast Division for the first 21 games but handed over the division lead to the Yard Goats on Tuesday. Hartford is now a half-game in the lead with five games left against Portland at Dunkin' Donuts Park this week. Although the series could set the tone for the second half, the teams have two more series to look forward to, both taking place at Hadlock Field.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 27, 2013 - Portland beat Harrisburg 5-2 in the annual Future's at Fenway in front of a crowd of 12,801. Keith Couch earned his 8th win of the season, working seven frames on two hits and two runs. Travis Shaw went 3-for-4 with a solo-homer into the visitor's bullpen.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy will take the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight. He last pitched July 22nd at New Hampshire and tossed 4.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out six. Kennedy has faced the Yard Goats twice. In two starts Kennedy is 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA against Hartford. He has tossed 12.0 innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits while walking two and striking out nine.
