Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
VICTORIAVILLE, Que. - The Saint John Sea Dogs doubled the Victoriaville Tigres 6-3 Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven President's Cup quarter-final series.
Jonathan Huberdeau had a pair of goals for the Sea Dogs, Zack Phillips and Eric Gelinas had a goal and an assist each and Stanislav Galiev racked up three assists. Stephen MacAulay and Danick Gauthier also found the back of the net for Saint John, while Jacob DeSerres made 25 saves for the win.
Samuel Groulx, Pierre-Luc Pelletier and Yanni Gourde scored for the Tigres and David Honzik made 33 saves in the loss.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff series continues with Game 4 Wednesday, the second of three straight in Victoriaville.
The Sea Dogs put themselves in a tough position in the early going when Alexandre Beauregard took a roughing penalty at 1:09, and Nathan Beaulieu followed up with a high-sticking double minor less than a minute later. But Saint John's penalty killers came through to keep the game scoreless.
The Dogs then took advantage of their first man advantage of the night when Gelinas got a blast through traffic and past Honzik at 8:59. Kevin Gagne and Steven Anthony assisted on the goal, the second of the playoffs for Gelinas. MacAulay then extended the lead to 2-0 with his first post-season goal, an unassisted marker at 11:10.
DeSerres kept it that way with a great save early in the second period, stretching out his right leg to rob Philippe Maillet on a rebound. Maillet set up a goal late in the middle frame, however, winning a dump-in in the right-wing corner and working it out front to the trailing Groulx, who converted at 16:50.
Huberdeau restored the two-goal lead at 1:55 of the third. Galiev stole the puck along the right-wing boards and got it to Phillips, who found Huberdeau in front. Huberdeau, fresh off being named the No. 3 NHL draft prospect in North America by NHL Central Scouting Monday, deked Honzik to make it 3-1. Phillips padded the lead on a power play at 9:14, finishing Beaulieu's pinpoint cross-ice pass from the right point for his fifth of the playoffs. Galiev recorded the other assist.
Pelletier made it interesting at 15:21, roofing a wrist shot to cut the lead to 4-2. Maillet then had another great chance in front but DeSerres stoned him once again. Shortly thereafter, Gelinas threw a shot on net from the left point, and Gauthier redirected it past Honzik for his first of the playoffs. Tomas Jurco had the other assist on the goal, which came at 16:15 of the third.
Huberdeau then made it 6-2, knocking in Oke's rebound at 17:52. Galiev had the other assist on the goal, Huberdeau's league-leading ninth post-season marker. Gourde rounded out the scoring for Victoriaville at 18:14.
The series continues with Games 4 and 5 in Victoriaville on Wednesday and Friday, both 8 p.m. Atlantic Time starts. Tim Roszell will have the call on News 88.9 FM . Fans can also catch all the action online via the official TELUS QMJHL webcast (click HERE to order; charges apply).
