Sea Dogs Fall 8-1 in 10 Innings to Yard Goats

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (18-15, 58-44) fall 8-1 in ten innings to the Hartford Yard Goats (17-16, 48-54) on Tuesday night.

Wikelman Gonzalez pitched 4.0 innings to start allowing one run on two hits while striking out eight before Brendan Cellucci, Ryan Zeferjahn, and Luis Guerrero relieved for 4.0 scoreless innings. Chase Meidroth, Blaze Jordan, and Matthew Lugo all recorded multi-hit games.

Hartford took the early lead in the top of the first after Kyle Datres hit a lead off single before three consecutive walks loaded the bases. A wild pitch allowed Datres to score and Hartford led, 1-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Yorke hit a leadoff double (15) before a single from Chase Meidroth put runners on the corners. An RBI groundout from Nathan Hickey would score Yorke and the Sea Dogs tied the game at one.

With the game tied through nine, the Sea Dogs played extras. In the top of the tenth, a ground-rule double from Drew Romo would score two and the Yard Goats took the 3-1 lead. A two-run single from Datres would extend the lead before an RBI single from Grant Lavigne made it 6-1. An RBI groundout from Jordan Beck along with a sacrifice fly from Yanquiel Fernandez capped off the eight-run inning.

RHP Nick Kuzia (3-1, 4.93 ERA) earned the win tossing 1.1 shutout innings allowing two hits while walking one and striking out one. RHP Theo Denlinger (1-4, 4.70 ERA) was given the loss. He did not record an out and allowed six runs (five earned) on three hits while walking two.

The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field tomorrow, August 9, 2023 for game two of a six-game series with the Hartford Yard Goats. First pitch for game two is slated for 6:00pm. Portland will start the RHP Sterling Sharp (3-4, 5.75 ERA) while Hartford will give the ball to LHP Joe Rock (1-7, 5.37 ERA).
