Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs captured their tenth victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Victoriaville Tigres by a score of 4-2 in front of 3,202 fans at Harbour Station. Saint John is now 8-0-0-0 on home ice in 2010-11 and 10-2-0-1 overall.
Stephen MacAulay (2), Jonathan Huberdeau, and Stanislav Galiev all scored for the Sea Dogs in Sunday's victory, with veteran net minder Frédéric Piché making 17 saves in earning his fifth win of the year. At the other end of the ice, Antonio Mastropietro (32 saves) suffered the loss between the pipes for the Tigres while Guillaume Goulet and Phillip Danault each tallied markers for the visitors in a losing effort.
Russian-born winger Stanislav Galiev gave Saint John a 1-0 lead 6:01 into the first period, shovelling a loose puck across the Victoriaville goal line to make the fourth tally of his season of the power play variety. Sophomore sniper Jonathan Huberdeau doubled the hosts' advantage 1:23 later, beating Mastropietro in tight on a super-smooth backhand-forehand deke to register his ninth goal of the year.
A highlight-reel-calibre marker by Stephen MacAulay put the hosts up 3-0 in the final minute of period number one, as the St. Louis Blues prospect stick-handled around a diving defenseman in spectacular fashion prior to rifling a wrist shot past Mastropietro's glove hand to improve his 2010-11 goals total to three. Simon Després and Gabriel Bourret both picked up assists on MacAulay's sensational short-handed effort.
The lone goal of period number two came off the stick of overage Tigres winger Guillaume Goulet, who banged home his fourth of the year to bring an abrupt end to a lengthy scramble in Sea Dogs territory in the 27th minute of play. Victoriaville then reduced their deficit to one 4:13 into the third period, with Phillip Danault knocking a backhander to the back of Saint John's net.
That would be as close as the visitors would get however, with Stephen MacAulay locking up a win for the Port City's major junior squad by firing home an empty-netter in the late-going. Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Friday night road showdown with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre (puck drop - 7:30pm). Saint John's next home game is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 5 at 7:30pm versus the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
