Portland takes the opener 5-0, drop game two 2-0

Portland, Maine - The Sea Dogs (15-9) and Reading Fightin Phils (14-11) split a doubleheader on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Portland took game one 5-0, Reading answered in game two with a 2-0 win.
Cole Sturgeon provided the only run the Sea Dogs would need in game one with an RBI single in the third off of Shane Watson (L, 2-1). Rafael Devers provided the rest of the offensive fireworks with a grand slam to straightaway center field. The homer was Devers' sixth of the season, tying him for the Eastern League lead, and his third career grand slam (last: 7/26/15 @ Charleston).
Jalen Beeks (W, 4-1) extended his scoreless streak to 19 innings and picked up the victory for the Sea Dogs. Beeks allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings while walking two and tying a season-high with eight strikeouts.
The rains came in the fifth inning of game one delayed the game one hour and 10 minutes. After the delay, Ty Buttrey entered in relief for Portland and worked two perfect innings to close out the game.
The Fightins shutout the Sea Dogs 2-0 to take game two and split the twinbill. It didn't take long for Reading to score, after Scott Kingery led off the ballgame with a triple, he scored one pitch later on a wild pitch by Taylor Grover (L, 1-1). Reading added their second run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jorge Flores off of Jamie Callahan.
Yacksel Rios (W, 1-1) earned the victory in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Mario Sanchez started the game for Reading and worked 3.2 scoreless, while Jesen Therrien (S, 5) closed out the game with two perfect innings of relief.
The Sea Dogs and Fightin Phils finish their series tomorrow afternoon at Hadlock Field, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. LHP Trey Ball (1-1, 4.15) will make his fifth start of the year for Portland, he'll be opposed by LHP Brandon Liebrandt (2-1, 2.86) of Reading.
