Fightins and Sea Dogs split double-header
Fightins get their first win at Hadlock Field this season with game two win
(Portland, Maine) - The Reading Fightin Phils (14-11) and Portland Sea Dogs (15-9) split Saturday's double-header at Hadlock Field. Portland took game one while Reading won game two in what was a long afternoon.
In game one, The Sea Dogs scored five runs off Fightin Phils starter Shane Watson (2-1) in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead. Cole Sturgeon hit a RBI single to score Joseph Monge for the first run of the inning. Mike Olt reached on a fielder's choice then Rafael Devers hit a grand slam, his first at the AA level.
Reading managed just four baserunners throughout the game. Scott Kingery and Malquin Canelo hit doubles while Osmel Aguila and Joel Fisher reached base on walks. Jalen Beeks (4-1) earned the win as he pitched five shutout innings. He struck out eight batters while giving up two hits and issuing two walks.
There was an hour and ten minute rain delay. Ty Buttrey pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Sea Dogs to secure the win. Tom Windle pitched a scoreless inning while Alexis Rivero pitched two scoreless innings after the rain delay.
In game two, Kingery led off the game by hitting his third triple of the season off Sea Dogs starter Taylor Grover (1-1). Kingery would score on a wild pitch during the next at-bat to give the Fightin Phils a 1-0 lead.
Mario Sanchez made his first start for the Fightin Phils and he didn't disappoint. He pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out three batters while giving up two hits and issuing two walks. Yacksel Rios (1-1) entered the game to pitch in relief with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
Jesen Therrien entered the game in the bottom of the sixth to pitch in relief of Rios. Reading got an insurance run off Sea Dogs reliever Jamie Callahan in the top of the seventh. Jorge Flores hit a RBI single with two outs to score Mitch Walding and give the Fightin Phils a 2-0 lead.
Therrien earned his fifth save by striking out three batters in two innings of work. Rios earned his first win of the season.
