Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SYDNEY, NS --- The Saint John Sea Dogs suffered a 5-1 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Centre 200 on Friday night, falling to 31-28-2-2 on the season as a result.
Saint John battled Cape Breton to a 1-1 draw over the course of a highly-combative opening thirty minutes of play, but the home team netted four unanswered goals during the game's second half in laying claim to victory.
Robert Slaney, Nicolas Chouinard, Michael Ward, Logan Shaw, and Stephen Horyl all scored for the Screaming Eagles on Friday, while Mike Thomas tallied the lone marker for the visitors.
Import Sea Dogs goalie Robert Mayer (41 saves) is now 24-27 following Friday's decision, while Cape Breton's Olivier Roy improves to 33-13 after stopping 25 of the 26 shots sent his way.
After a back-and-forth opening sixteen minutes of play failed to produce any quantitative offence, Logan Shaw gave the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 lead late in the fist period. The rookie winger fired a long-range blast that pinballed its way to the back of Saint John's net, giving the 16-year old Glace Bay, NS native his fifth career goal.
A hard-working Mike Thomas produced the equalizer for the Sea Dogs 5:32 into the second period, jamming the puck across the hosts' goal line to record the sixth goal of his season with overage forwards Payton Liske and Shea Kewin each picking up assists on the play.
Olivier Ouellet came extremely close to giving the Sea Dogs the lead a few minutes later, ringing a wrist shot off of a Cape Breton post to afford the hosts a significant piece of good luck.
Robert Mayer then came up with a highlight-reel stick save on Robert Slaney, stoning the veteran winger from point-blank range after he was set up perfectly by Joey Haddad in close proximity to the Saint John net.
With 3:03 remaining in the middle frame, Stephen Horyl finished off a frantic scramble in the Sea Dogs' zone by banging home the second power play goal of his freshman campaign, resultantly giving the home team a 2-1 lead as Friday's intra-divisional showdown reached the second intermission.
The Screaming Eagles' power play unit struck again early in the third period, as Michael Ward redirected a Nicolas Chouinard shot past a sprawling Mayer to both pick up his seventh goal of 2008-09 and give his team a 3-1 lead. Chouinard then scored a goal of his own 16:20 into regulation's final frame, firing a shot through Mayer's pads to put Cape Breton up by three.
Robert Slaney added a fifth goal to the home team's total 85 seconds later, cementing a victory for the hosts in the process.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Sunday afternoon match versus the Halifax Mooseheads in Saint John. This game (puck drop: 4pm) has been designated âFan Appreciation Day', with a variety of exciting promotions set to be staged at Harbour Station. Tickets to this highly-anticipated contest can be obtained by calling the arena box office at (506) 657-1234.
