CHARLOTTETOWN - This time it was the Screaming Eagles on the receiving end of a comeback as they fell 3-2 in overtime to the Charlottetown Islanders in PEI on Saturday night.

In the first period it looked as though the Eagles had missed an opportunity to open the scoring when a Cape Breton power play was interrupted as the Eagles took a too many ice penalty. However the Eagles would use the extra ice to score on the ensuing four on four, as Isiah Campbell passed to Gabriel Proulx on a two on one. The Eagles forward made no mistake and put the puck past Matthew Welsh.

The Eagles would kill off the rest of the penalty, and would take advantage of another special teams type situation later in the period. With a penalty called against Charlottetown, Eagles goaltender Kevin Mandolese headed to the bench in favour of an extra attacker. After moving the puck around with precision Mathias Laferrière would hammer home a one timer to double the lead before period's end.

It was almost the same score at the end of the second period as well. But Charlottetown would draw their first full power play of the evening in the final two minutes of the middle stanza, and Lukas Cormier would take advantage. Just five seconds into the man advantage the Islanders defenseman blasted a shot over Mandolese from between the circles and Charlottetown was on the board.

Thomas Casey would tie the contest early in the third period. After being denied on a scoring opportunity at the right side of the goal, another chance would come on to Casey's stick. He fanned on the initial attempt but was able to get his own rebound and put it into the Eagles goal. Regulation would finish with the two sides tied at 2.

There would be just one shot in the extra session, enough to determine a winner. Casey came up the right wing and was able to sneak one through Mandolese to complete the come from behind victory for the Islanders.

Welsh picked up the victory, stopping 20 of 22 shots. Mandolese took the loss, stopping 35 of 38 shots. Screaming Eagles defenseman Leon Gawanke did not record a point on the night and saw his 12 game point streak come to an end. The steak is a Screaming Eagles record for a defenseman.

The Screaming Eagles now begin a three game home stand that starts on Wednesday night against the Saint John Sea Dogs. Puck drop is at 7 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
