Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Coming off of a 2-1 victory last night over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, the Charlottetown Islanders are back in action tonight at the Eastlink Centre, as they welcome the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to town.
The Eagles (13-11-0-1) are coming off of a victory themselves, defeating the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5-4 in overtime on Thursday. Former Islander Mitchell Balmas had a hat trick in that game for Cape Breton.
Winnipeg Jets prospect Leon Gawanke has been on a tear over the past month, recording points in 12 straight games. His stellar play now sits him second among all defensemen with 28 points in 25 games this season.
The Islanders' victory last night keeps them on par with the rest of the top teams in the league, sitting one point behind the Drummondville Voltigeurs for fifth overall in the QMJHL.
Brett Budgell and Nikita Alexandrov each recorded a goal and an assist last night. For Budgell, that now gives him eight goals in eight November games. Alexandrov now has points in five straight games, a stretch that has yielded him nine points.
Not to be outdone by Gawanke, Islanders defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph has had quite the November himself, recording 13 points in 8 games this month. His 20 points in 21 games is good for fifth among all defensemen.
Goaltender Matthew Welsh expects this game to be a hotly contested one, despite the difference in the standings between the two teams.
"Cape Breton's record is pretty deceiving for the talent they have on their team." said the Halifax native. "They have a high-powered offense, a lot of great goal scorers, and a really good goalie too."
"They're kind of a wild card team that could win on any given night. We'll definitely have to be sharp coming home on Saturday."
