Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The Charlottetown Islanders displayed that relentless, never-give-up style of play that fans have grown to love tonight. Thomas Casey scored two goals, including the overtime winner, as the Islanders came from behind to defeat the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3-2 in front of a wild Eastlink Centre crowd.

The Eagles would kick off the scoring midway through the first period. Forward Isaiah Campbell would streak down the wing on an odd-man rush and find Gabriel Proulx with a cross-ice pass. He'd beat Isles netminder Matthew Welsh to make it 1-0 for Cape Breton.

Mathias Laferriere would extend the lead to 2-0 nearing the end of the first. On a delayed penalty, Cape Breton would work the puck around the Islanders zone. The puck would find it's way on to Laferriere's stick and he'd make no mistake, wiring it high on Welsh for his 12th goal of the season.

The play would bounce back and forth throughout the second period, with both teams exchanging good opportunities throughout. It wasn't until the end of the period that the Islanders would break through the wall that Mandolese had put up. On the powerplay, Lukas Cormier would walk out from the boards and in to the centre of the offensive zone. He'd fire a wrister past Mandolese for his third goal of the season.

The Islanders would carry that momentum in to the third period and utilize it to tie the game up. After a flurry of shots on Mandolese, Thomas Casey would grab a rebound and put it over top of the Ottawa Senators prospect to tie the game up with lots of time in the third period.

As the clock on the third period wound down to 0:00 and the overtime period began, the two teams battled all over the ice surface in an effort to nab that extra point. Casey would use that extra ice to put the game on ice for his hometown team. The Charlottetown native would enter the offensive zone and whip a wrist shot on Mandolese that would squeak past him and in to the net, sending the Eastlink Centre crowd home happy.

Casey says the familiarity most Islanders had with battling back helped them pick up two key points tonight.

"We were comfortable coming from behind, a lot of guys had done it last year. We stressed in the room to stick with it and we played tight as a group." said the second year forward.

Playing on a line with Brett Budgell and Nikita Alexandrov, the trio have developed an excellent chemistry and emerged as a dangerous threat for the Isles.

"They're two really good players, and it's a big year for them." said Casey on his NHL Draft-eligible linemates. "I'm just trying to play my game, keep it simple, and distribute the puck."

Matthew Welsh made a number of timely saves in this game for the Islanders, recording 20 saves in the victory.

The Islanders wrap up a busy weekend of action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Baie-Comeau Drakkar at 3:00pm at the Eastlink Centre.
