Scrappers Hand Black Bears First Home Loss of the Season

Granville, W. Va. - In its second home series of the season, the West Virginia Black Bears lost to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-2.

The Black Bears faced Mahoning Valley in the team's opening series on the road, and since then have climbed to the top of the New-York Penn League's Pinckney Division.

West Virginia starting pitcher Aaron Shortridge opened up the game red-hot on the mound. Through the first two innings, the righty got five of his six outs via the strikeout, nestling pitches in the zone that left the Scrappers looking.

Mahoning Valley finally got on the board in the third inning with a pair of singles and a sac-fly to bring the score to 3-0.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, West Virginia cut into the deficit. After RF Brett Kinneman walked to start the inning, 1B Luke Mangieri's single and a Scrappers' throwing error brought home the Black Bears' first run.

Mahoning Valley got a pair of runs in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch, building the lead to 5-1.

In the next two innings, the Black Bears got quality work from a pair of relievers. P Cody Smith pitched a hitless seventh inning in his first professional action, and P Logan Stoelke followed suit in the eighth by striking out two batters and getting the third to ground out.

After P Miguel Hernandez threw another scoreless inning in the ninth, the West Virginia bats came alive. With one out, DH Jhoan Herrera started things off with a towering solo homerun to left-center field to put the score at 5-2.

LF Edison Lantigua and SS Robbie Glendinning continued the charge with a pair of singles, but the Scrappers got two quick outs to end the game and hand West Virginia its first loss at home this season.

Both teams are back at Monongalia County Ballpark tomorrow night for the second game of the homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
